Just having moved to Key West, it was recommended by my father-in-law, to go "sit at the bar at Pepe's and have lunch". Mentioning this to Tom (22 years employed and one of 4 rotating bartenders), he asked me "Do you always listen to everything your father-in-law says", that got quite the chuckle from the six locals filling the stools. $1 draught Yuengling beer all day. Yup all day! (12pm on Sundays, Key West law). Cocktails fall around $5.75 and are not skimpy on the booze, usually a double shot and more. All using fresh squeezed juice. So go to the bar, have lunch, countless $1 draughts and talk liberal politics to the locals or cheer the sports on the tiny t.v. in the corner. My favorite place to hang in Key West. Oh yeah, the delicious soups go great with beer ^ ^

Pepe's breakfast rocks! Strong coffee, fresh squeezed juices, pineapple bread & huge-fluffy-yummy-omelets. A great way to start your day in Key West.

I usually come here for breakfast and they do it right. The place looks like a dive from the outside, but the inside is old and quaint. The outdoor seating area is my favorite part of the restaurant. Just don't sit under the rooster nesting above! The service is good. The coffee is above average.

Loved it! Hubbie devoured his bone-in rib-eye-cooked perfectly med-rare, & I loved the black bean soup-so flavorful & the oysters 3 ways were all so delish I couldn't decide which ones I loved best! Wish I could go back & deliberate further! Service was friendy & helpful, relaxed laid-back atmosphere on the patio.

I can't decide if our waiter or the coconut bread was better!! The grapefruit was picked off the tree and squeezed into my Vodka. It was a great breakfast and I was sent home with a recipe for the bread.

Although they don't have the unique variety of foods that Blue Heaven has, Pepe's has been a tradition in Key West since 1918. Have one meal here and you can completely understand why. Everything you order is made quickly and accurately, and to a high standard. It's tiny, so you may have a long wait but the wait is worth it. You definitely have to try Pepe's before you leave Key West.

THE BEST keylime pie on the island. Menu better for lunch but the mixed drinks use fresh juice rather than mixers and are delicious. Gotta visit!

Fresh Sqeezed juice makes an afternoon greyhound or morning mimosa sOOOOOoooooo refreshing. I love their breakfast BLT all day long. Classic old school florida hang out. pssst - every Thursday is "Thanksgiving"

BREAKFAST ROCKS HERE. This place is great. The service was good, the food was fresh and the mimosas were refeshing. LOVE IT. We will go back again and again.

The service is slow and abysmal. We ordered breakfast: an omelet, bacon and sunny side up eggs. The food came out incorrectly. It took an additional 15 minutes to get the sunny-side up eggs. The bacon showed up even later. The bartender did not even apologize for such awful service other than to state that they have "the two slowest cooks working today." The place is very busy and sort of dirty. I say skip this place.

This is a must! Please do not confuse this with the cuban Pepe's down on Mallory Square. This is the oldest Restaurant in Key West! It's a bit pricey but well worth it. This is one of my husband and my favorite place's to eat and we love to bring people here because it never disappoints. They have a great spinach salad. My hubby raves about the filet mignon wrapped in bacon and I love the mahi mahi Florentine; it's delish!!!

Rip off! Went for breakfast...ordered an omelet and they charge extra for everything...but that is not clear on the menu ...so you get your bill and it is a bit of a shocker! My spinach/bacon/cheese omelet was over $10 and that didn't include the potatoes which were another $2.50. It would be one thing if this was an excellent omelet but the omelet was under cooked and they skimped on the bacon and cheese. Ugh! Harpoon Harry's is down the street and is a much better value and has better food.

Went to Pepe's tonight on vacation, currently in the hotel taking a minute to digest that awesome meal before we head back out.... Had their Prime Rib which was phenomenal! We also brought our own shark we caught today and they were happy to cook it for us and we let the chef prepare it his way and it was dynomite! Hope to find myself back in Key West some day and if I do I'll be sure to return, service was exquisite.

Terrific breakfast in typical Key West style. Locals even bring in their dogs...atmosphere open with fans...very original specials. The crab cakes and french toast with cranberry & walnut bread were fantastic!

We went there with high expectations.First I had the bean soup but it had basically no taste. Then I ordered the steak sandwich. It was good but the fries were burnt. The whole experience were just okay.

we went to the cuban coffee queen for breakfast, but after realizing it wasn't a sit-down restaurant, we walked across the street to pepe's cafe. the outdoor seating was so cute. lots of character and the food was worth waiting a while for a table. the mimosas were so fresh and the french toast with berries was perfectly yummy! the service was great.

We stopped off at Pepes for dinner on strong recommendation from friends, as well as the reviews on Yelp. First impressions were excellent, a very quaint environment... with a charming patio section. The service was good, and the food for the most part, very good. My girlfriend had a burger which she loved, and we ordered rock crab legs and I ordered a mahi chowder to start. The crabs were okay and the chowder was great, although, it didn't appear to be Manhattan style as it was described? (creamy) I ordered their largest steak - a 16oz strip. (I just got off the ferry after camping for 2 days on the Dry Tortugas - I needed some animal matter!) Disappointingly, the steak came out well done (I asked for medium rare)... and it was tough. Otherwise, the atmosphere gets top ratings, food good for the most part... and the kicker? The unique experience of dining in a patio where there was a dog, a local kitten roaming free, and a bar customer with a parrot on his shoulder.

Great great great. I can't imagine a visit to Key West without a meal or two at Pepe's. Embrace the island lifestyle, saunter in, sip a mojito, and enjoy a leisurely and tasty dining experience. Just don't order the Sunday omelette special - I learned the hard way that is how they clear out leftovers. But hey, all is forgiven. I'm still going back.

Waited an hour to sit on an 'off season' day with lots of open tables. Missed breakfast and found the lunch to be short of impressive. Butter. Cheese. More butter. The killer Bloody Mary they served me is the only thing carrying the second star here.

I had heard about Pepe's for a long time but never stopped in. Well, I finally tried it, I understand what all the fuss is about. This place is great. The Coconut Bread is addictive good thing the recipe is on their website I have made it many times at home.

A MUST GO TO PLACE!! My boyfriends colleague told him about this place when he was working in Florida last year.. Just so happened that we went to Key West for a little Thanksgiving Vacation. We decided to go to Pepe's to Thx Giving Dinner and it was better than most of the home cooked meals that I have had!!!! Apparently they have Thx Giving Dinner once a week every week so if you are in Key West and you want a good Turkey meal a super must try...The place is over a 100 years old....

Pepe's used to be a great place, a Key West Original. The current managment turned it into a tourist trap with T-shirt and coffee cup sales displays everywhere. The service matches the T-shirt shop style of doing business. Too bad - I always loved Pepe's and dined there regularly.

Ate here for dinner tonight. My wife had a burger, I had the fish of the day, Mahi-mahi. The burger was good, so was the fish. The servings of sides is very generous as are the portions of the entrees. I rated this restaurant a 3 as the food is good but not outstanding. The ambiance is one of the bigger draws, as is the history of the restaurant. The service, has been and is still outstanding. While we enjoyed our meal, we did note that it seems like their prices have gone up. Entrees will run about $25 but everything in Key West is similarly priced. The breakfast menu still looks reasonable, so I will probably try it too.

My husband and I went to Pepe's for brunch on a Saturday while on vacation at Key West. The man at the front scribbled our name down on a tiny piece of paper and told us 20-30 minutes wait. Totally understandable to have to wait at a small restaurant on the weekend. 45 min later after we watched people get sat that came after us, I walked back up to the gentleman and commented that people are going ahead of us and this was longer than anticipated. He clearly didn't recognize me, asked what my name was, scrolled his chicken scratch paper, and remarked, "oh ya, I though I sat you guys 20min ago. Somebody, must have answered to your name" Fine. slight mix-up. He assures us we're next. 5 min later he taps a man on the shoulder and shows them to their table (mind you, I'm a woman, i don't think a mistakable one, at that), and then walks over to another group and tells them they're next. I again walk up to the host, question why we haven't been seated and he has clearly forgotten what I look like (again!) tells me there was a mix-up with another group (referring to my group) and then I exclaim, "ya, that was me!" He blames the guests again that they were responding to our name. One mistake, I completely understand. Don't let it happen again and/or make it right. Customer service was horrendous. We didn't stay for him to make the mistake a third time after waiting 50min for nothing. Walked over to Sarabeth's and had a wonderfully pleasant breakfast by wonderfully pleasant customer service.

Don't let the curtness of the employees scare you away. They mean well, and are just busy, and just want to operate an efficient business by getting to the point. Speaking with them after our meal was finished, they ended up socializing with us, telling us about key West, and even gave us a recipe for their Key Lime Pie. I ordered the blackened grouper sandwich, which was very tasty and sizable. Everyone at my party seemed to enjoy their meal. My friends and I visited the Keys on a mission to find the best Key Lime pie, and this place had my third favorite pie, which I'd still rate 5 stars. (First goes to Key Largo Conch House, and second goes to Kermit's). Three of my friends ranked PePe's pie first out of about 9 places. The presentation of Pepe's Key Lime Pie is dubious at first, as it comes in a pie pan that looks like it came from your mom's cupboard, and the pie looks like it's falling apart with many large cracks on top. After cutting through the pie and serving it, you'll realize why the pie was cracking so much. The consistency of this pie is very fluid, almost like a flan. This pie wasn't overpowering with tartness, but still had a good flavor. I wouldn't say that this pie was creamy, but it was still fluidy and the texture was definitely non-standard but still positive. Overall I enjoyed this pie, but the optimal pie would have a slightly thicker consistency, more like Key Largo Conch House's pie. What really stands out with this pie is the crust, which is a home-made graham cracker crust, the secret ingredient being cinnamon. The crust almost actually tasted like a fresh graham cracker or cookie.

We had a very nice breakfast at Pepe's. It's a little place, tucked away and a little hard to find. The entire place has that worn patina to it, but that's part of the charm. Everything we ordered tasted great, although the coffee wasn't the best (my husband is a bit of a coffee snob). I was also a little annoyed because after the waitress brought our food out, she never came back to our table once to check on us and forgot the mimosa that I had ordered. I never had a chance to ask her about it because she just disappeared. After we had finished our entire meal, she showed up to bring us the check and at that point, I didn't want it anymore. A little bummed I didn't get my champagne at 10am (ha!), especially since it was our first morning in Key West, but whattayagonnado? All in all, great place, service not as great. I wish we had tried it for dinner, I've heard that is good too.

Omgosh this was the best meal I've had in the keys! We came over from the hotel when the front desk offered Pepes Cuban as a choice of the locals. It was NOT Cuban but it was freaking awesome. mind you, I am not a breakfast eater. However, I had the special. It was fan freaking tastic!!! I had a corned beef omelette with home fries, peppers, scallions and cheese in it. It was perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, and perfectly delicious! I also opted for the freshly baked coconut bread as my choice of toast. Oh my gosh! It was like a little taste of heaven. The waitress was very friendly. There was a line of people waiting to get in and it was well worth the wait. Luckily we got there at perfect time and was able to sit down immediately that we hurried so that the next people could enjoy it. My husband had a ham and cheese omelette. Our friends had a steak omelette and some other kind of omelette. They all said their's was good but I highly recommend that you listen to the waitress for recommendations because mine was absolutely fantastic. Don't miss this place when you're in Key West for breakfast

As one of the oldest restaurants in Key West, Pepe's has become a landmark. The exterior looks pretty bad, I mean you feel like you might be walking in a crack house but the interior is much nicer. Still has a casual feel but the restaurant is affordable compared to many of the other offerings close to the heart of Key West on Duvall Street. Menu isn't large but I went with one of the specials which was a shrimp pasta with garlic bread and various veggies. Quite a bit of food and shrimp, it lasted me two meals. When in Rome do like the Romans, so I had to try some key lime pie for dessert. Not a huge serving but it hit the spot.

Disappointing, But I Seem To Be In The Minority... I stopped in for a late lunch while visiting in Key West earlier this month. Several people had recommended it, and I was right down the block, so I stopped in. First of all, it doesn't look like much from the outside, or when you enter. It was too hot to sit in the outdoor area, so I sat inside where it was cool, but dreary looking. My server wasn't very enthusiastic or friendly when she seated me. She may have been at the end of her shift. I was the only customer at the time. Not very many interesting options on the lunch menu, and all of them were heavy and seemed overpriced. I began wishing I had come in for breakfast or dinner instead of lunch. I settled on the 4oz white-collar burger with bacon and swiss, as opposed to the 6oz blue-collar burger. My burger came out quickly, but it was overcooked and pretty greasy. I don't think I even ate 1/2 of it before paying my tab (which I had to find someone in order to pay) and leaving. I'm really not interested in going back. Prices were high, food was so-so, and service was not very good. This was my worst meal in Key West.

Loved the ambiance! The place is pretty compact as must places in the keys but it has a great outside courtyard. The service was very friendly and fast which is always nice when you have a toddler. The food was delicious. I had a club sandwich which was perfect. Bread was nice and toasted and the turkey slices were nice and chunky with crispy bacon slices. My husband had a fries grouper burger which was also very fresh and delicious. That was the special of the day so it's not in the menu. You must try their oysters they are ridiculously delicious. And the desserts are finger licking good. Love this place can't wait to go back.

A large portion of food will come at you. The dinner consisted of a dozen raw oysters, bowl of chili, grilled chicken sandwich with cole slaw and the snapper special with garlic aoli. The oysters were huge, with a home made cocktail sauce and limes on the side. Chili was solid helping and tasty. Cornbread was served, tasty but it made me want to have the banana bread from Blue Heaven. The fish sandwich was a bit plain, but the slaw was outstanding. The snapper was tasty because of the aoli. Got key lime pie to go, and found it fantastic. It is sweeter than the key lime pie found at kermits, which some have hailed as the best on the key. Went to breakfast the next morning. Got the Pepe steak omelette, blueberry bread and grilled mashed potatoes. The latter was nothing special, literally left over mashed potatoes grilled. The omelette was solid, big serving of fluffy eggs, steak, sauteed peppers and onions and cheese. Blueberry bread is better than the cornbread from dinner. Definitely stop by. Next time in the keys I want to grab the happy hour specials.

Went back again this year and boy we were not disappointed. The food is spectacular and the coffee is phenomenal. It's an old KW establishment that I highly recommend for breakfast. Make sure to check in with the host/hostess, because you really want to make sure you're not passed by!

This place was suggested by a waitress we met in Sarasota who used to live here and it was great! Oysters raw were okay, no horse radish and they weren't cold enough. Had the blackened Mahi which was fresh and Perfect! Christmas sandwich was tasty and well thought out and prepared. Key Lime pie I wanted to eat a couple slices of, and the service and prices delivered a nice value. Only here for two days but will try and come back!

The other 350 reviews give you a gist of what we felt. Great atmosphere - the outdoor patio / bar area was a very nice place for a dinner away from the crowd and noise of Duval St - it's very serene, comparatively. It's even sporting a plastic covering over the pergolas to shield you from the rain if it pops up. Good food - We really enjoyed their lobster/crab bisque, which was their soup of the day yesterday. Very smooth, full of meat, and the right blend of butter and salt (not overwhelming like some). The main dish on the other hand was just okay - we go the Pepe's style fish, which was a Mahi yesterday. It tasted like an okay piece of fish prepared in a different way (I think it just had tomatoes on top with a special sauce of their own). Broccoli was tough and the sweet potatoe was the tiniest sweet potatoe I have ever seen - very disappointing. Great pie - We couldn't resist a piece of key lime pie - it was about $7... which I guess is pretty standard for Key West, but it was oh so good! Here they put ample whipped topping on it which goes nicely with their homemade graham cracker crust. Yum. Drinks - pretty good. My wife got a Mojito which was overwhelming minty and had too much lime - they fresh squeeze their lime, orange, and grapefruit juices here for the cocktails, which is a nice touch but they had just put too much juice for my wife's tastes. I had the special drink, which was a berrycolada - containing freshly blended berries in a traditional pina colada. We really enjoyed the berrycolada. Service was great - as soon as we finished a plate, a busboy was out to collect it. Our waitress kept good tabs on us and made sure our water was full. All in all we were pleased with our experience and can continue on with the recommendations.

Really good, "eldest eatery" in Key West, established 1909. Sub par coffee, so get it ahead of time at Cuban Coffee Queen. Omelettes and bread of the day are great, hash browns were meh. Pancakes were very good. Don't miss the fresh squeezed juice--so good! Lots of ambiance here.

Breakfast BLT helped, though didn't cure, my hangover. But it was delicious, the service was good and the prices were right. Husband LOVED his omlette, which was the daily special and had a whole mess of meats and peppers and things in it.

Don't be turned off by the outside appearance and don't waste your time on some Duvall st tourist trap. This is the best restaurant in key west. The service is fantastic and friendy. Food and drinks were fast and without error. Prices are totally worth it. great bar and wine menu. We had dinner here and chose steaks and fish within our party. Food tasted so so good. Mashed potatoes and vegetables were perfect. Must try spot. Do it.

Pepe's is said to be the oldest restaurant that opened in Key West over 100 years ago, for that fact alone it was worth a try. So we stopped in for breakfast. The place is on the smaller of side of other places we dined in Key West, so when we arrived for breakfast there was a wait to sit outside. We watch a big fat tabby lay lazily under a tree as we waited for a table, which was not too long. We got our table and ordered. I had the fresh squeezed OJ, which was a nice little treat. I ordered an omelet and was a little disappointed to see that a side of potatoes was extra - so to replace those carbs I went with a bagel (just to see how they are in Florida) and actually it wasn't horrible. A decent toasted bagel to my surprise. At one point another diner walked in with a little dog on a leash which the cat did not like so he took a swipe at the dog. Seeing this was going to be a problem the waitress helped the tubby tabby up a tree.. breakfast and a show! I have to say people in Key West love to dine with all sorts of animals... roosters, cats, dogs, lizards, smokers... just go with it.. I like the courtyard dining, friendly service and the show.. I don't like ala carte option of a side of potatoes with your eggs that is prevalent in so many places down here.. they are potatoes..do these place really have to nickle and dime you over them? If I ran a place down here there would be a choice of skillet potatoes, fries or some dressed greens with all breakfast.. i'll be sending around petition soon for this, be on the lookout! lol

This is actually my 2nd time here. Realized I have not yelped this place yet. Not a whole lot to say. This place has a tendency to get busy. But today we were lucky and didn't have to wait. We are always greeted as soon as we walk in. Service is always on point and very friendly. Servers are very knowledgeable. And so far, both times we have been here they have had food and drink specials. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and order the omelette special and the strawberry mimosa and screw driver special. Both, VERY good. The food is always hot, packed with flavor, comes out fast, and super tasty. No complaints here. Whenever we are in Key West, this is our breakfast/brunch/ lunch spot for sure.

I had been given mixed reviews on this place, but since it was considered an icon of Key West I decided to give it a try for lunch. I like it so much I came back the next day for breakfast. This place is exceptional. If you have a bad meal here there must be a serious problem going on in the kitchen because everything I had was very good. For lunch I had the black and yellow tail wrap which came with a mashed potato patty that was grilled to perfection. We went back the next morning for breakfast and it was just as good. We had a mango French toast and a breakfast burrito with pulled pork both excellent. sometimes you have to wait especially at breakfast but it was excellent.

We went here for dinner. I thought the whole meal was fantastic. We ordered the Cuban nachos and churassco. Me and my husband shared and it was plenty to eat. The service was a little slow but the server had a full section, so I can't fault her for that. I loved the architecture of the restaurant and think it's a Key West must stop.

We had heard so much about Pepe's & wanted to try it for ourselves. They had an awesome breakfast special- mango, blackberry French toast. It was so so good!! Highly recommend the food, but be aware they do allow smoking in the outdoor seating area.

Killer spot! Drove by it countless of times when in KW and finally went for breakfast saturday. They had a bit of a wait but they reserve some tables near the bar for waiting and drinking. One of the bartenders even came by to get us a drink. When seeing them litterally fresh squeeze OJ you know I had to get a mimosa. The BF had a coffee. Maybe 8 minutes or so two seats opened up bar side that we were able to sit at and eat. The place is very reasonably priced. I got eggs benedict and the BF got a 3 egg breakfast. The eggs benedict had super thick canadian bacon. It was awesome. It came with some potatoes. I also got a bloody mary which was pretty good. It's august so I can't blame them for the fact it's 100 degrees but more fans would have been great. Definitely a place I will go back to when in KW.

This place is so great. Such a relaxing and fun place to sit outside and get some mimosas (which were great by the way). The black bean soup and chowder were homemade and so delicious. My dad loved his mussels as well.

This is one of my favorite places to have breakfast in the whole world! I prefer to be outside, even in the Key Weat heat, to be with the trees and chandeliers. Breakfast here is always on the must do list for vacation. Freshly squeezed orange juice, huge omlettes, tasty home-made breads and a delightful staff make for a lovely morning. I especially appreciated the attention they gave my daughter the last time we were there - we always feel welcome and at home.

Cool atmosphere. Very old and rustic, half of restaurant is outdoors with a really cool old tree. Good was good, but I felt the menu selection was very tiny. Not many choices. Good location, recommended by a local, which always means good things.

Came here after a long morning out on the water and we were ravenous! The food was good but nothing out of this world. I had their chicken sandwich with an artichoke and bacon spread and their fried mashed potato patties. My husband had their bbq. I did love the atmosphere and the servers were incredibly friendly and even asked for our order early to get it in before a large party. I also love that they have diet coke which seems to be hard to find on the island!

Great breakfast! French toast didn't need syrup it was so delicious. A special omelette with crab meat was delicious. Fresh squeezed orange juice. The tables are varnished but are sticky and smell like polyurethane because they haven't been dried properly (due to humidity). Service was fairly good.

Our breakfasts were adequate. Not sure what all the fuss is about with this place? I ordered a mimosa and the eggs Benedict, which the waitress said was her favorite. (I took that as a good sign). Our breakfasts were brought out quickly. My English muffin was a little overcooked. (It was dark). The potatoes also showed some signs of overcooking. The ham steak on each was generous, but it totally overpowered the other ingredients. We arrived at about 11:40 and they stop serving breakfast promptly at noon, so maybe we received the last dregs of what was already cooked? Mostly everything on my plate was just chewy. I don't recall what my husband ordered, but his take was also that it was "entirely ok." The outdoor patio was nice, but I probably would have skipped Pepe's considering how many other excellent dining options there are in Key West.

I'd come back to Key West just for this breakfast alone. Its what i always wanted in a restaurant. From the service, to the food, to the decor. It's reputation speaks for itself. There was a blueberry bread they were serving that day which i could of had a loaf of. My wife couldn't keep her hands off my plate because how good it was. Since being a steakhouse, i ordered the steak omelette which had nice chunks of meat. The melted cheese sauce inside went terrific with the juices from the meat. Very refreshing mimosas which was made with freshly squeezed orange juice. "I'll be back"

I think what I loved the most about this place was the air conditioning and the mojitos. The decor was pretty cool, I really wanted to try the Cuban food but was just to hot to eat anything. But I would definitely recommend going and giving it a try.

My absolute fave in key west.....for years I would just relish the fresh grapefruit and titos cocktails in the rain with great peeps wandering off their boats from the marina......but lately the big Florida pink shrimp and steak.....oh my....decadent perfect

Cons: 1. Is breakfast all day so hard? Really? We get there at noon so--no more breakfast for you. Then we wait 45 minutes for our lunch order to which the waiter says, that's because we're changing over. Maybe someone could have mentioned that or just closed the place if it's not really open. 2. Most of the waiters are great but a few should look into withdrawing some savings to buy a personality. It seems most restaurants in Key West have their own set of rules that suit them and they couldn't care less if you find their rules inconvenient. I'm guessing most of the service people are underpaid but they need the job (rents are high) so you get decent but hurried and somewhat gruff service. Pros: What everyone else has said. Generally I love the place.

I do not see what all the hype is about. This was a very average meal. I could have prepared this at home...better. And I'm no great cook by any means. A piece of broiled, unseasoned fish, steamed unseasoned asparagus and a baked sweet potato. I promise it looked and tasted like something from a cafeteria. I would never have paid $70 for this food. And, by the way, no appetizer. My husband and I each got a beer. $70. Couldn't believe it.

A few of the locals recommended Pepe's as the place to be as far as breakfast goes, and they were right! It was a Saturday morning, so it was a bit crowded (and the place is a bit small too), but the wait was only about 10 minutes. I chose to sit outside vs inside, although I knew it would be hot. What I was prepared for, however, was the amount of "free range" chickens who paid visit to the establishment. They were not bothersome, but might put off a few people. As far as the food is concerned, my experience was a pleasant one. The warm, freshly baked poppy-seed bread was delicious! Great pairing with coffee. The hubby had the french toast special of the day and I went old school with scrambled eggs, bacon, grits. Every item was well cooked and flavorful.

Had a dozen mixed roasted oysters and Beer cheese soup. Oysters were sweet and tasted really fresh. Beer cheese soup was rich and delish. This place had both locals and tourist. Service was prompt and efficient.

Ants. My first impression of Pepe's was that there were ants on the table, floor and wall. Ordinarily, that would be enough to send me in to a 'kill it with fire' speech and be out the door. But, I was with some folks who were hungry, hot and tired. They wanted lunch and I was not going to get to indulge my idiosyncrasies.* I get it. Pepe's is old -- like, 'first restaurant in Key West' old. I suppose ants and the like are part of the charm. I give props to a business that's over 100 years old. That's a major accomplishment and, I think, given its age and location, I would be better suited to coming here for a drink in the courtyard, rather than Sunday lunch. But, I *was* here for Sunday lunch... and this is what happened. We sat and I opted for an Arnold Palmer. I was going to get some limeade (hel-lo, Key West?) but the waitress talked me out of it. To prove her point, she brought me a sample. My face closed in on itself. That was some seriously tart stuff. She told me it's used sparingly and not as a glass of refreshment. Lesson learned. My Arnold Palmer was decent. Feeling lucky and festive, I decided on the Thanksgiving Sandwich and a side of German-fried potatoes. The sandwich was... alright. Turkey, stuffing and cranberries on toast. Unsurprisingly, it was dry. I guess that's to be expected when ordering an autumnal sandwich in early summer. The potatoes were decent but who goes to a restaurant to eat fried potaters? Sling Blade? Mhm. Age may be part of the charm but even old things can benefit from a good cleaning. From a tourists' perspective, Pepe's is worth checking out (you're in Key West; you might as well) but stick to getting a cold one outside. *But is it an idiosyncrasy to be grossed out by bugs in one's dining space?

  • Jon D.

Well, based on all the positive reviews, I was disappointed in Pepe's. My $28 steak came out raw so I had to send it back. The oysters were average, and so was my wife's fish dinner. Maybe it's better for breakfast, but I wouldn't return here for dinner. The steak was tender but nothing extraordinary.

Great food and service. This is the real key west atmosphere you are craving. Cuban food, drinks, and live music. The wait staff was greaf. They even have some fun picture taking spots outside the restaurant. The shrimp was fresh and the fried fish were crispy.

For our final dinner in Key West, we decided to try Pepe 's Cafe. We both had the mahi, mine grilled and my husband's blackened, and he says the blackened mahi is really good. Dessert was key lime pie. My mahi was okay, just mahi; the vegetables (asparagus and carrots) were steamed but had no seasoning added. Pretty bland. The key lime pie was delicious and served with LOTS of whipped cream. Service was attentive. Bar is dog friendly and has fans going to make eating outside on the patio enjoyable.

We had such a fun time, especially speaking with the locals ( yes they eat here). We just stopped in for post sunset drinks and a snack. So we only had the nachos. They are made with plantain chips and only get better from there. Take time and enjoy the live music!

Spectacular breakfast place that reminds me of home. Very laid back atmosphere. The plain toast had a sweetness to it like it was toasted on the flat top right where the French toast is made. I will be going back for morning recovery every time I go to Key West. Make sure you hit it by 8:30am or expect a wait that gets pretty hefty by 10:00 during popular festivals. International powerboat championships to be one of them.

I love me some Pepe's when I'm in Key West, so much that I went twice during my most recent visit to the island. It's a completely unique experience that I'll try to successfully sum up in this review, but it's 100% worthy of a visit during your trip and even if you're a local. Much like many other places I visit in the keys, the atmosphere at Pepe's is so cool & cozy... it almost feels like you're in a tree house on their back patio. Seating is pretty limited but you're more than welcome to grab a drink at the bar while you wait, and the most important thing to know about Pepe's is that every single one of their juices are fresh squeezed... they actually do it in front of you at the bar. I highly recommend the greyhound for the fresh grapefruit juice, but if that sounds too sour, literally anything with fresh juice will do. Careful, though... after two of those bad boys I was tipsy at 10am, which can make for a loooong afternoon. The menu is pretty expansive but keep an ear out for their daily specials! My friend got a special with grilled mahi topped with bleu cheese with a side of fresh potatoes and asparagus, and she was pretty much in food heaven. The grilled mahi sandwich is freaking ri-di-cu-lous, and they offered a chicken, rice, and green chili wrap while I was there that I'd order again in a heartbeat. If you're smart, you'll sub mixed fruit for fries or whatever side your food comes with. There's something about freshly sliced passion fruit that just screams, "hey, you're in Key West, and this is awesome." The bartenders love to chat and if there's not a bunch of you, just eat at the bar instead of getting a table. I'm missing this place already & I'm forever thankful to the person who introduced me to it! My lunches are going to seem so mundane now.

Had the Mahi Mahi sand which for lunch with a side of macaroni salad. Very small portion of Fish only covered half of the bread. Asked for grilled onions and got a raw slab about 1/4" thick instead. Macaroni salad tasted like it came from a grocery store container. Doesn't even come close to the same sand which served at Schooners which is beyond awesome.

On an island that has terrible service everywhere this place was awesome. And the food was amazing too! I recommend this place over all 5 of the places I've been so far! They been around so long for a reason.

The first day we had breakfast here was too awesome for words. The special they had that day was sausage gravy over homemade bread. My God. So good. The homemade bread was HUGE and the gravy was awesome and together perfect. They did not have the same special the second morning and the service wasn't as efficient as the first day but their homemade bread is really just the best thing ever and thus the second breakfast was saved. Their fresh squeezed orange juice is REALLY fresh squeezed orange juice and the coffee is pretty good as well.

Pepe's boasts at being the oldest eatery in Key West. Sign says 1909. Holy moly! They beat Ernie and Harry to town. No wonder they got the drill down. Word of caution: they serve breakfast only before noon. If you're there for an early lunch, you better like breakfast. So . . . There I sat perusing the non-brekkie menu when the waitress - attentive and friendly - showed up to take our order. After getting that condescending "You're such a dumbass!" look and the "They're only serving breakfast now." admonition from Ms. Perfection, I hurriedly ordered the western omelette. Ms. P chose the French toast. No disappointment on either side of the table. My omelette must've been half a dozen eggs at least, chock full of ham, cheese, red bell pepper and onions. Topped it off with a splash of Pepe's chipotle and it was paradise on a plate. Across the table I could hardly see the French toast under all those fresh strawberries and blueberries. There was little conversation as we became consumed with consuming. Frequent "mmm's" were the only chat we could muster. In the end both plates were dishwasher clean. Nary a crumb survived. Ready for the punch line? Eighteen bucks! In Key West that's a way gone bargain fershure! Brekkie at Pepe's. Hell yeah!

This is known to be a popular locals hangout. The courtyard dining is nice. The food and service were just average. I think the staff gives you better service if they know you, with tourists getting marginal attention.

Rude staff. Asked for availability for a table outside and the host was extremely rude, after given a table and experiencing the same unprofessional demeanor by the server I decided to leave. My first poor customer experience in Key West in 3 months. You are in the hospitality service, be nice to your customers. Shame on you!

Don't be scared by the looks from the outside. It looks like an old house with a wood fence, although the fence has character. The fence has peep holes according to the size of the person and for four-legged creatures. One peep hole has a women's hat painted onto the fence over the peep holes, and there is a little bow in were hair would go for a little girls and so on. The peep holes are also at the height of each typical person. Once you enter that ugly fence, it is so pretty inside. It has a lovely courtyard with so much character. We took a seat and we were helped by a giggling and sweet waitress. She suggested a few items on the menu since it was my first time at this place. I ended up having a traditional breakfast of eggs, english muffin and canadian bacon. Their menu is very simple and that was perfect because I was in the mood for a simple breakfast. Being the coffee-holic that I am, I wanted to point to all you fellow coffee-holics that you can't get your cup more than half way without the waitress coming by and filling you back up. This made my day. I heard their lunch and dinners are really good and I'm looking forward to returning on my next trip back to Key West.

This place is very good, loved the corn bread. My husband and I had the stuffed shrimp which was amazing and I had the blackened house fish for dinner. Everything was good but the highlight definitely was the cornbread and stuffed shrimp. The restaurant is a hold in the wall but clean and the employees are friendly and very welcoming. Don't let the outside full you the food is great.

when in key west,Florida, pepes is the place to start the the day in paradise. then go to .Louie's backyard patio on the ocean for perfect lunch fare, and don't miss Latitudes at sunset, for a fancy, pricey, romantic dinner on the beach of a private isle, just offshore, through the Westin hotel. reservations necessary for a magical evening.

This place was killer!!! Brought our dog, which the staff played with and gave treats. Julie was a rock star and I can't say enough great things! She recommended the breakfast burrito (has pulled pork in it!!!) and it was spot on. French toast was amazing too! She had jokes and suggestions and totally made the experience memorable. Definitely go! Ask for Julie, you won't regret it!

My boyfriend and I came here on our last day before leaving Key West. Came in on a Thursday morning around 10AM no wait but all the tables were pretty much full. The waitress was really nice. She told us about the specials and got our coffee and orange juice right away. My boyfriend and I both ordered the omelette. It was pretty good, nothing really special about it. Pepe's Cafe is a good and solid place for breakfast.

Another of many new places I have recently tried out. From the outside, there really isn't much to consider or get excited over. It wasn't until I saw pictures from other Yelp reviews that I learned there is something behind this blah looking entrance. The building looks somewhat decrepit and run down; just kinda plain. To the side of the building there is a wood panel fence that looked as boring as the building. I was expecting the inside to be somewhat bland as the outside and if it was we had a backup plan already to go. A two second peak into the place through the fence and our minds changed unbelievably quick and we hadn't even seen a menu yet. The place oozed charm. The inside area was very small, but very comfortable with wood paneling and simple decor; but it was the outside courtyard that sold us. I know it isn't very masculine for me to say, but this place was adorable.... brick paver floor with trees growing through, bougainvillea trees/vines growing overhead thru a wood trellis and various hanging lights. (my review is referring to breakfast only) The menu was very simple but then again that is my preference for breakfast. We ordered simple eggs with english muffins and a couple side orders of roasted potatoes and canadian bacon; the eggs and side dishes are all done a la carte. It's not all done a la carte though as they do offer eggs benedict and a couple varieties of omelets. I wasn't in the mood for alcohol but everyone raves about their bloody mary's (even though that is my drink of choice). All the food was very good. I really loved that they bring a pitcher of ice tea with your glass so you can refill without waiting on a server and it incidentally prevents early refills which I hate because my ratio of drink vs sweetener is damaged. Everyone here was overly nice, especially our quirky but adorably sweet waitress. I would definitely recommend this place, but be patient on getting a table because this place has only seven outdoor tables and about four inside tables (although you can eat at the bar if you prefer. Enjoy...

Granted, we only ordered dessert here, but it was so good that we came back at the end of the trip because this was the best key lime pie we found on the island during our 7 day trip. One person ordered the blueberry pie and enjoyed it a lot, but the hands down winner was Charlie's homemade key like pie. Extremely light and fluffy so if you're looking for a custard-type pie, it might not be right for you. It was perfect for the 4 of us! Also, we asked for the recipe and they gladly gave us a copy!

What a great place for breakfast! They have this cute outside patio and the service was great. I had the French toast for $4.50 and it was pretty darn good and my fiancé had the small order of waffles that was not so small. Our bill came out to $15 and the food and service was great.

We had a wonderful dinner followed by a wonderful breakfast the following day at Pepe's on our September vacation there. I am glad we went for both meals as most of these reviews are for their breakfast, their dinner is a great homestyle meal as well. After nearly 10 days in Key West for work and then leisure, I was getting very tired of eating out. Pepe's dinner was high quality and I did not feel gross afterwards. Breakfast had all the major staples as well as few specials. We sat outside for both meals and really enjoyed the dog-friendly atmosphere (despite making me miss my pup).

Had to stop off at this old restaurant for their famous key lime pie! Served in a bowl, it's hands down the BEST key lime pie I had while driving down the entire US 1. I would recommend this place to anyone. My only regret was that we didn't stay longer to have more meals here!

We had to wait for a table, but not too terribly long. Food came very quickly. I ordered a half broiled chicken. It was so hot, that I could hardly eat it initially. The chicken was super dry. It was clear that it was either microwaved to heat it or it was sitting under heat lamps. Thank goodness I had gravy!! My husband had a steak and he enjoyed it.

GREAT local place. I was quite surprised at the quality of the food. It's just casual burgers n' such fare but I have to say close to the best burger I've ever had. Just a really fun place to go where you'll always run into locals if you like to chat with them and find out more of the nice off the beaten path places they like to frequent.

We had dinner here during the week. The food was ok, I had a blackened fish sandwich, wife had a burger. Ambiance was local, down and dirty, nothing fancy.... Perfect for us... Edible, decent taste.... Service was on point, turn and burn 'em, get them in and out.... Just as well Smokers on the patio made it an unpleasant sit outside, so we moved inside.... With so many options closeby, there's no need to come back...

If you are casual and relaxed, this is one of those come anytime kinda place and breakfast, lunch or dinner you'll leave happy. Good for locals and tourists, its diner-ish. The wait staff is warm and welcoming and the tables turn quickly so don't be a afraid to wait.

We go to Key West every thanksgiving and this is my favorite place to go. The BEST shrimp cocktail in all of Key West. All of the juice based cocktails (I drink sea breezes ) are fresh squeezed to order. They are fantastic. And the night we went for dinner, I had the filet mignon and it was fantastic. Great flavor and cooked a perfect medium rare. Really, this place is so friendly . Does not look like much from the outside but very cozy inside. Chelsea (bartender) is super nice and the patio is dog friendly, which is just a bonus! Highly recommend!

We'd been to Pepe's several times over the years for breakfast - always delicious - but FINALLY went for dinner. I had the snapper special and my husband the porkchops. Everything was great: service, food, drinks. And a nice visit from Billy-Bob the resident feline, who then proceeded to drift off to sleep sitting straight up. Can't wait to go back.

I love Pepe's for breakfast or lunch. The daily homemade bread is reason alone to get outta bed after a hard night of Duval Street reverie. We made new friends all around including an adorable puppy named Charlie. My favorite dishes in order based on my last visit: - Potato Pancakes - Yummy mashed potato/scallion goodness. Loved these. Everyone at the table wanted to steal them. - Cream cheese and scallion omlette - My cousin swears the eggs are different in Key West. They must be with all those chickens running around The Bloody Mary was good but it needed some doctoring in my opinion. Lucky for me there was pepper, tabasco and worcestershire sauce on the table to help make it happen. If you have never been, you should absolutely put these Key West landmark on your list of places to visit next time.

Best breakfast in Key West. Each time I eat here I order something different. This time I ordered the french toast special with a raspberry cream cheese sauce and fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, pineapple). Loved it, and I am a meat and potatoes girl. Also had a mimosa. Took an order to go of sausage gravy and biscuits, which was excellent. Homemade. No wait. Go early. I sat outside and fully enjoyed my experience. Servers are excellent - experience is obvious and appreciated.

I've eaten here twice now. I actually had thanksgiving dinner here last year, but didn't review it because it was a once a year menu type thing. It was an above average classic thanksgiving dinner. Today I went for breakfast and had a bacon, cheese, and tomato omelet. It was pretty good, but it was ultimately an omelet (know what I mean?). The homemade butter pecan bread was really wonderful. ***The reason I came back (and will continue to come back) though is the key lime pie. If I could give it 10 stars I would. This is my favorite key lime pie anywhere. It's really perfect and is definitely worth the trip.***

What a wonderful place that will put you in touch with the "real" K.W. We sat at the bar and were totally smitten with the great drinks and Kelly (only on Wednesday & Fridays). Eat at the outside bar - great fun to be had by all. Old Town K.W. not Duval Street. Breakfast is worth doing.

Man friend knew of this place and brought me here knowing I love going to locals spots especially those that have stood the test of time. We are talking over 100 years people! Doesn't look like much on the outside but on the inside, Pepe's Cafe delivers the Key West charm and homey feel....felt as if I was at a family BBQ. We came for brunch. Tip: you will most likely wait as this place was pretty hopping sunday morning but we posted at the bar and didn't mind much. Bartender was a babe, sweet, and made a mean bloody mary which I started off with (strong and spicy- just the way I like it. After I saw their special blackberry morning cocktail, I was jumping for joy! I love blackberry and watched her serve my muddled blackberry mix, champagne, and "triple sec for strength"*she winked. Lady knew the way to my heart. After the host came over and apologized for telling up our wait for the table would be considerable longer than expected, we told her we didn't mind eating at the bar and as luck would happen, two stools open up- that is what I call FATE people! Besides, I was having a great time and as a bartender myself, thought their bartender was doing a great job! She was efficient, kept a clean work station, very personable (boop your nose gf!) and made yummy drinks....woman kept those blackberry cocktails coming- like she was reading my mind! I ordered their famed french toast because well I love french toast and saw the great reviews. Great portion of French toast, berries, and sauce, I exclaimed, "omg yum!" Man friend ordered an "italian omelet"....stuffed with sauce (creative idea) and lots of meat (what man doesn't love meat?!) Overall we left full, satisfied, and I had a nice buzz for my nap on the way back to Miami... Would definitely come back!

Good food! We were in & out in 20mins before our flight out, but food was great. ALWAYS get the potato cakes (mashed potatoes from the night before), and ask about the omelette special! MY wife got some of the key lime bread which she said was "amazing." I'll get breakfast here agin whenever I'm in town.

We were in Key West last summer for about 5-6 days. We had breakfast here every morning. Though we had hung out here for afternoon drinks and snacks on previous trips - this (for me) is a much better breakfast spot. Nothing fancy but their homemade bread is scrumptious. That week it was a coconut bread - not too sweet but super flavorful and toasted just so. I had the usual Key West (hangover prevention/treatment and/or fuel for an entire day of walking around the island) breakfasts. My companion did the same but he has a sweet tooth and loves the french toast stuff while I'm more of a savory eggs and hash kinda person. We were there early enough (maybe 9A) to not ever have to wait for a table and be able to eat inside (AC) each day. The servers seems to be of a chosen family and do a pretty good job of serving and being attentive. Never had to wait to pay (hate that!), or for a refill of coffee or ice water. It's a solid no frills spot that serves locals and guests alike. The tourists (thankfully) aren't too hip to this spot yet. Maybe because it looks pretty rough from outside? Keep it rugged Pepe's. We'll be back!

I'm so disappointed in the new management and owner. I've enjoyed over 10 meals over the last 4 years at Pepe's, I tell everyone I know to go, but no longer. From now on they will get a disclaimer with the recommendation, stay away from the breakfast there is much better to be found on the small island. The drinks are still great, but it's hard to screw up a screwdriver or a bloody or a nice glass of Jamison for that matter but the food...ehhh....not comparable to Blue Heaven. Don't eat the pancakes, the rubber their made with can't be consumed.

Sat outside. Not a fan of the smoking allowed. Margarita wasn't anything to write home about. Chicken sandwich was... just a chicken sandwich. The mac & cheese was good. But in 80 degree weather how often are you craving mac & cheese?

Pepe's gets only one star because I never actually got to eat in the restsurant. I'm a disabled vet from the Iraq War with a service dog. I should mention I never ask for any special treatment - just common courtesy. The staff at Pepe's were the most unhelping, uncaring staff I ever encountered at a restaurant. Even though they allow any dog in their patio area they treated me and my K-9 as completely unwanted if not a burden. I never got served. I could not get any water for my dog. I could not get any server to assist me and a request to speak to a manager was never fulfilled. I just hope the next vet who tries to eat here has better luck.

I was dragged by my gf. She was very impressed by the oyster there last time or to be more accurate the oyster sauce. We arrived around 11:00 and the place was packed. So we waited an hour and had breakfast before lunch can be served. When the oyster finally came, it was worth the waiting. they were so fresh and delicious. The sauce was amazing too. Plus, the price was so so so good. Never had those price in Miami. Enjoyed it so much. I will definitely go there next time I am going to Key West.

We were directed here by the captain of our charter fishing boat. I caught a mahi mahi dolphin and we brought the fillets here to be prepared. It was an enjoyable evening with a great margarita and their sweet cornbread is so good!

Not a big breakfast person but this place was great. Fresh Squeezed Juice to start and a good omelets special. Reasonable and nice atmosphere

Very good place to eat on the island. Amazing prices on great concoctions. Mostly steaks, limited seafood. We pigged out. Our waitress was very personable and attentive. Very busy occasionally. Funky old atmosphere. Crappy front view. MatreD was very good and attentive.

This is just one of those must-visit places when you are in Key West. Those who know Key West / have been here many times will include this restaurant as a required visit on the trip. It is well known, so lines are long /wait times can be long, but the food & experience are worth it. When you go to St. Louis, you visit Ted Drewes. When you go to Key West, Pepe's in just one of the places you need to check off.

We had a very nice lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. The four of us had fish sandwiches along with some cold beer.

Pepe's claims to be the oldest restaurant in Key West. Operating since 1909, they have certainly figured out how to serve up a great breakfast. They serve all of the standard breakfast fare accompanied by their freshly made bread. The bread choice changes daily. Hope you are there the day that they are serving their coconut bread. It is amazingly. The servers are friendly and efficient. The photographs that show the history of the building are interesting. Stop by and you won't be disappointed.

With all the reviews Pepe's has, there isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said. But I'll still say a few words... The food here is pretty good. I had my standard bacon and eggs with grits. The menu stated they served hormel bacon. I thought that was kind of funny for some reason. It turned out that hormel bacon kicks ass. I am only buying hormel bacon at home from here on out. My friend had some sort of omelet special that he seemed very happy with. I had a bloody mary that was very good. The service is very good at Pepe's. The decor is pretty cool, you know you are in the Keys when you are there. The next time I am in town, I will eat there again.

Fabulous Cuban food, a gem right in the middle of South Beach madness. I LOVED my black beans, yucca, sandwich, and LOVED the Sangria.

This place is a nightmare. Their chili was so bad, we are both still hurting. The waitress was okay with us, but she was so rude to the guys sitting next to us they got up and left, and I don't blame them. Nothing special about their food and what's on the menu. Never coming back and we're local.

A very enjoyable experience. The restaurant has obviously been there for A very long time. The service was great as was the food. I had the French toast special topped with blueberries, pineapple and mango. It was delicious. My only suggestion would be to upgrade the coffee. It seemed a bit weak to me. Pepe's is worth the visit.

best breakfast on Key West, hand's down there is always a wait, but so worth it. Yummy fresh squeezed juice, my honey loves the spicy bloody Mary's and delicious food. They had the most amazing homemade peach bread last weekend, and we ordered extra to go!

This place is really cute. I came here on Thanksgiving last year and then again this past week while in Key West. Its really casual, local place. The Thanksgiving dinner was quite good if I remember correctly. This last time I had their French toast special as they don't start serving lunch until noon (which was sad because I'm not a big breakfast fan). The French toast was pretty good, tried my honey's omelet which was good, and their butter pecan bread was really really delicious. Most of the food here is about average, some is slightly better. Our waitress was really nice, but the thing that gives it a four star rating from me is the key lime pie. It is the best ever. So so so delicious and tangy and mmmmmm. They serve it even if you go during breakfast :)

Finding a place like Pepe's Cafe based on the reviews of other fellow Yelpers is why I feel that Yelp is a necessity when traveling. I would have never found this on my own, nor would I try it based on the biased suggestions of the hotel connoisseur. And the saying "you can not judge a book by it's cover" certainly holds true when one goes to Pepe's. The dilapidated exterior is nothing to look at; in fact it may persuade one to not walk in. Pepe's has been in business since 1909, and it probably hasn't been renovated since. Despite it's lack of modern decor, one who dines here will soon forget the unattractive surroundings. We got there when it opened @ 7:30am. I had one of the specials of the day: lump crab cake over tomatoe w/ avocado, black beans, scrambled eggs and their fresh blueberry bread. Yes they serve bloody mary and mimosa this early (except on Sun; alcohol not served till noon). My friend had the French toast special which had cranberries, walnuts, vanilla and cinnamon inside; w/ sliced bananas and blackberries on top. Both were unbelievably delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. I highly recommend this place for breakfast!

Had fish of the day sandwich for lunch (mahi mahi). For app I had the stone crab claws with lime dipping sauce. Both were very good. I liked the assortment of sauces on the table. Really enjoyed eating out in the courtyard. Drinks are all fresh squeezed juices thats a treat. Our waitress was a bit gruff which is why they got 4 stars not 5. Atmosphere was awesome and very key-west. I'd very much recommend and will be going back (all the way from DC)

Horrible experience and worse service. The waitress had an attitude bordering on a personal affront. She rudely scoffed when we mentioned that 2 of our 7 party members were vegetarians and seemed annoyed, consequentlly she told them to fend for themselves because it's a steakhouse, and that she couldn't guarantee anything was vegetarian. After they consequently didn't order anything, she roughly grabbed the menus from them in annoyance. It was pretty unbelievable and uncomfortable.

What the heck... Been coming here for years and missed this place? Their food is wonderful. Half price oysters during happy hour. Wednesday night is pasta special night. There is something here for everyone. All food items prepared fresh. Got a vegan..... Vegetable plates too! Kitschy look, old FL. Style. Don't let the digs fool you. Hey they make a Cuban coffee ice cream out if this world! Get off Duval St. For Pete's sake!

Being the oldest restaurant in Key West, its no surprise that this restaurant is a real dive. But its a dive with character. We ate there for breakfast, and had to wait about 20 minutes. Its clearly a very popular place. Had the omelette special, which was black forest ham and vegetables, and it was very good. Service was good and the staff is friendly. I would try it again.

Building : Great place to have diner or lunch. Older building with character and I love the bar in the patio/outdoor area. Appetizers: Stone Crab and Shrimp. I'm not so crazy about crab but I did think the stone crab was good. The sauce they serve it with is also very good. The Shrimp was amazing! THe flavor of the shrimp was very good as was the cocktail sauce it was served with ( i'm almost sure this cocktail sauce is made from scratch) Drinks: I had a strawberry margarita on the rocks ( they use fresh fruit for drinks) and a Key West Ale...Margarita was very good. DInner: Went on a sunday night which is BBQ night. I ordered the BBQ ribs with potato salad & bbq beans. The beans were great. Kidney beans with bacon...Potato salad was also good...Ribs were very good. The meat falls off the bone and they serve a very generous portion.

We stayed in Key West for over a month and this became our favorite breakfast spot after day one. We strongly suggest sitting at the bar if possible to order breakfast and delicious drinks. Fresh squeezed OJ for screwdrivers and mimosas are the way to start the day. Be alert at any daily breakfast specials because they are the way to go. Also very pet friendly which is a plus. This is a must see for your visit to Key West. Keep in mind happy hour along with daily oyster races for great prizes.

My favorite key lime pie. We ate here twice, due to the awesome and friendly service, Billy the cat, and thanksgiving dinner Thursdays. I had the blackened fish sandwich twice and am still thinking about getting a third before I leave. The thanksgiving dinner was a nice meal, and well prepared. At $19 a little pricey but what the hell, it would cost us ten times to make the meal at home. Service was so great though, and we were welcomed back our second time like regulars. If they have the strawberry shortcake cocktail available, make sure you try it.

The wait for a table for breakfast was pretty quick considering the other places in the area were about 60 min (like Blue Heaven)... The wait for food was a different story. It took about 30 min after we ordered to get our food and when you're waiting for breakfast... it's borderline torture to wait that long. I just wasn't impressed by the food either. I ordered the french toast special which was supposed to come with 3 types of fruit and only had 2 on the plate (no mention about it). Also, another meal was supposed to have the bread of the day - banana bread and came with blueberry instead (no mention here either). I can understand when the kitchen runs out of stuff, but just let us know. Be careful of the up charges too. When they offer different options for your meal, it will most likely be at your expense. Apparently you have to ask if it's extra, they won't just tell you. Sadly, I wouldn't go back or recommend it. Beth's Tip: Breakfast lasts until about 12pm, maybe go after for lunch or dinner... may be a better experience.

Stumbled upon this place while looking for a breakfast spot. This is a cozy local spot that not only had great food, but was also very decently priced. If you're there for breakfast you can't go wrong with omelets. Their pancakes are huge and fluffy (consider a small stack), and if you're lucky they'll have the crabcake over eggs dish.

If you want to know the best happy hour for Oysters in Key West, look no further. 1/2 price Oysters (excellent) and cheap--but very good, drinks (not the watered down swill at many other happy hour places). Bartenders are really cool, fun, informal, and are fine hosts. Bar is like being in someone's back yard, and my wife and I loved it. Many locals, many oddballs, definitely a place to have fun. Went the next day for breakfast and had a fantastic breakfast of Eggs Benedict and the Special omelet washed down with Bloody Mary's. Morning bartender was a hoot, absolutely hilarious, honest; a classic Key West resident with great stories and a wicked sense of humor. Key lime pie was very good, worth ordering for sure. Plan to have the steaks next time I'm in town; i hear they are excellent.

Not the great experience I've had here before!!!!....I wanted something from the lunch menu and it was 12:30 and our waitress had a little "tude" to serve along with the food...I was corrected that it was still breakfast and would be breakfast for awhile!!!!!....I guess she doesn't work for tips!!!!!

One of our favorites on Thursday night as they serve thanksgiving dinner every Thursday. The BEST veggies always cooked perfectly. Many times one of us will order veggie plate and the other will order some other entree and we just share. Oops, almost forgot to mention the corn bread. Very delicious. Pet friendly and great bartender on the Thursday nights as we prefer to eat dinner @ the bar.

Worst place I've ever been. The place wasn't eclectic it was trash and there was mounds of dust everywhere. The French toast was done on sandwich bread not Texas toast and tasted like eggs no vanilla or cinnamon able to be tasted, also served the Thinnest bacon that can be bought. There was random garbage hung from the beams like old boots and slats of wood. For someone that lives here I expected more. Not sure how the kitchen passes inspection from what I could see it was filthy.

Love Love Pepe's Cafe - Went here for a late breakfast while on vacation. I love that it's a local place.. not a chain. The atmosphere is eclectic Key West. We had a super yummy breakfast.. fluffy scrambled eggs, great coffee, perfect corned beef hash (mine was so good my husband ordered a side for himself). Attentive staff... kept filling up the coffee as they went by. We didn't have to wait long as we went at the end of the breakfast service.. we had great drinks at the outside bar while we waited... it didn't even matter that it was raining. We'll be back for sure.

On our last night in Key West, my boyfriend really wanted a good steak and after searching yelp we decided on Pepe's because the reviews were so good. The restaurant itself is pretty small, with a small courtyard and bar area outside and a few tables inside. It was a nice cozy atmosphere though, and you could sort of look out the door at the palm trees and setting sun. They had some tarps up separating some of the courtyard and the staff told us that they were digging up a water pipe that night due to some water issues, but it wasn't too noisy so we decided to stay outside. The waitress was pretty efficient, not too friendly, but I think everyone was stressed about the water pipe issue. I had a pina colada, which was ok, and there was plenty of it. I had the 7oz hamburger which was really good, definitely 4 out of 5, and I have pretty high standards when it comes to burgers. I was disappointed that it didn't come with fries, only coleslaw, and you couldn't substitute. My boyfriend had a 8oz New York Strip ordered medium rare, which turned out to be a little too rare, so he sent it back. They took it back cheerfully and even gave him a second hot baked potato when the new steak came out. The second steak was perfect and he really enjoyed it. We were impressed with the service and the standard of the food. After dinner we got the check, and the waitress brought out a piece of key lime pie on the house to say thanks for our understanding of the construction - bonus!! We were excited about this and it really made us feel welcome and appreciated as customers. Plus it was totally homemade and absolutely delicious!! I would definitely recommend Pepe's for dinner if you're looking for high quality food at a good price (we thought they were very reasonable when compared to Duval St prices) in a laid back atmosphere.

As others have offered, note that this is only a review for the pie. My friends and I were pointed here by a local [working at Bad Boy Burrito] when we asked where to go for Key Lime Pie. I'd previously heard Blonde Giraffe, but Pepe's was said to feel less touristy. We went for the Key Lime Pie, and we got the Key Lime Pie... but we got the last slice! So we also ordered slices of Coconut Cream Pie and Banana Cream Pie. And were so glad we did. All three were delicious. Nicely sized slices, simple, with some whipped cream on top. Really some of the best pie I've had, and despite our initial impetus for getting to Pepe's, I might rank the coconut or banana first among the three! Pepe's was great about getting us lots of ice water, and we were just in time for the oyster shucking raffle. Fun if you stumble onto it, but nothing worth a specific trip for. If you end up at the raffle, though, and you're up there holding your key... take the deal instead of trying for the cash. Simple math. I did get the feeling the clientele consisted mostly of locals. Be careful where you sit outside. The beautiful trees that shade you also provide a great place for birds. Who sing, and flutter... and poop.

If this place was not recommended by a local and if we weren't starving we would have never stopped at this place from the look of it. Though I am really glad we did. The food is outstanding. I am really surprisingly impressed. Again the outside and even the inside look so run down that you don't expect anything of quality but they really are attentive as servers and the food was great. According to my boyfriend it was the best soup he ever had (smoked cheddar potatoe), which I have to admit it was great. Food portions were great too. We were so stuffed that we needed a damn forklift to get up. lol Definitely would go back there! I hear their breakfast is amazing.

This was the best breakfast during our stay in The Keys! I had a simple omelette with cheese, sausage, and bell pepper, but it was more than simple! I enjoyed the fresh ingredients and ate every bite. I even enjoyed the grits! As a southerner, it's hard to meet my standard for grits. My husband had the basic sausage, eggs, and toast breakfast, but again the fresh ingredients made the meal. We enjoyed the outdoor patio ambience including the Key West chickens who joined us!

Great spot in Key West. I stopped for lunch and noticed the menu has a lot to offer and their specials all sound rather interesting and tasty. Small and quaint inside with a very cool outside bar and sitting area. I would've liked to order from the dinner menu but the menu clearly states only available after 5. The strip steak for lunch was ok, not great but this place is definitely worth a visit if you're in Key West.

Pepe's breakfast is literally my favorite thing about Key West! Always have to pick a special of the day! Their breakfast bread is amazing! It's usually something coconut or key lime. I had the omelette of the day today, so good! Their french toast specials are really tasty and their biscuits and gravy too (and I'm picky about biscuits and gravy). Their staff is always really nice and on point. Plus they have a cat that lives on the patio. Just saying... this is the place to be.

Attended twice while in town. First time was brilliant and we loved the oyster happy hour. Returned the next day. As it was cold, we sat inside at last remaining table, which sat 5 people. When a smaller table vacated, and before we had been served, we asked if we could be moved. What we didn't expect was to be yelled at loudly by the server and cleaner. When we said we didn't mean to offend people, they loudly declared they don't like people "sitting at dirty tables". We were both furious and left. No tip. First time I've ever done that. Won't return - ever.

Was recommended this place by a frequent visitor of Key West and a local vendor. First of all, they serve iced tea in a pitcher with a glass, so your refills are totally covered. I loved this. We ate outside under the tree and tarp canopies. A cat snoozed right above us! The waitstaff knows what they're doing and move pretty quickly. I had a burger, my partner had a fish sandwich and we were both very satisfied with our lunch. Read the history of the restaurant in the menu, it's worth it. We didn't have a wait after arriving around 12:30, but quickly after there was a pretty consistent wait for a table.

We wandered into this place because it reminded us of a run-down, hole-in-the-wall bar in New Orleans called Lafitte's. Then we found out it's the oldest restaurant in the Florida Keys (since 1909), so no wonder. But like a lot of dives, it's actually pretty good. They have a full menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (some of which smelled delicious), and a great beer and cocktail selection. Draft beer is only $1.50, so it's also one of the cheapest places to drink in Key West. We just opted to sit outside on the covered patio and had a few beers and some Key Lime pie (which was pretty good, but not as good as Kermit's) but we'll definitely be back on our next visit to try out the food.

The food was 4-star, the service was 2-star, for an average of 3. The moment we'd paid, the manager came over and asked us to surrender our table -- in a very abrupt and blunt way. This was ironic, since it took forever for our food to come out. I should also note that there were three other tables open and only one group waiting. Won't be going back.

The wife and I saw Pepe's on our hotel room TV. There was a channel dedicated to everything about the Keys. After seeing that Pepe's was the oldest restaurant in Key West and the amazing reviews we decided to try it for breakfast before our glass bottom boat tour. My review is based off of our breakfast experience only. Drink: Mimosa- made with vodka and champagne. Unique, but good. Food: French Toast- I felt the bread slices were very small and mushy. There was fresh cut fruit served with it. We weren't huge fans. Sausage- not a huge fan Breakfast Potatoes- decent/crispy. Traditional Eggs Benedict- I felt the ham slices were too thick and didn't get that true hollandaise flavor. It was the best item we had however. I honestly hate to leave any bad reviews, but I always promise readers and myself I'll be 100% honest. Again, this was only our experience for breakfast. Lunch and dinner could be better.

After being called an idiot by Joe (fake picture on yelp) S., who apparently is a serious dog lover, I must point out the other misses in my review. If I did come off of turnip truck, I would not mind the dog, I fact, I would have brought my pig to Pepes where it would have felt at home.

If you like Margaritas, this is the place. I have been going to Key West for 4 years and they have the best and freshest margarita on the island. They also have fantastic mimosas! I've been here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every single item on the menu is fresh and homemade. If you go late, sometimes you will see locals after a day on the boat! You also need to try the fried oysters and biscuits and gravy!

Ive eaten at Pepe's a few times as I go to Key West to visit my family there. The place is usually busy all day long so expect to wait at least 20-30 minutes unless there is a seat at the outdoor patio bar. The food is excellent and always fresh. Prices are reasonable for what you get. The portions are plentiful and the service is always good. I love this little place and its in walking distance to Duvall street. Atmosphere is friendly but a bit loud.

Went here for lunch on vacation. The place was booming with people. All of the food was good but a few things stood out. We started with a Blackened Hogfish Caprese Salad that that was absolutely delicious. The Hogfish was some of the best fish I have ever tasted. The best part though was the dessert. The Key Lime Pie was the absolute BEST I have ever had in my life. As if that wasn't enough, the Coconut Cream Pie was also a must have. If you go here and don't order the pies you are totally missing out. Best part is, they serve pie all day! ORDER THE PIE!!! Other than the pie the food is good but just an ordinary lunch menu. A very good ordinary lunch but not good enough for 5 stars.

This place serves the best Key Lime pie I've ever tasted, and I've tasted a lot. I can't say anything about the rest of the food, but that Key Lime pie was worth the long trip to Key West on its own! This pie had the most homemade texture and taste, and the perfect amount of light, homemade whipped cream on top. Highly recommended!

This place is stupid awesome. It's a must on anyone's trip to KW. Steak omelette and homemade breads are spectacular. The atmosphere is uniquely Key West and just cool. A note to our folks in uniform, show up wearing yours for 50% off!

Great fresh basic breakfast and dinner choices. Historic because it is the oldest restaurant in Key West same location for over 100 years. Expect a wait most of the time but it is usually less than 20 minutes. Definitely a must try when visiting KW and you want an experience of old KW and a good basic breakfast or dinner.

Absolutely nothing but wonderful when you come here. Happened upon this place with my mom when we were on vacation and when they told me the wait was 45 minutes we almost walked away. But another group waiting told us it's worth it and supposed to be the best on the island. Sunday brunch, no hurry, why not. So we waited. And so happy we did! Even the plain black coffee was the best I've had in key west. The servers were all really nice and great at checking in on the tables without being overly so. We shared the Chipped Beef on whole wheat and the French Toast with fresh berries and peaches and ground nuts. There was no syrup on the French toast except for the fruit preserve on the fruit topping, so it wasn't too sweet. The outdoor seating was beautiful and the entire place had a wonderful nostalgic decor. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone passing through Key West. It's worth the wait, if there is one. :-)

Key West has so many options! Do not waste one of your vacation meals here! The eggs Benedict had an off flavor and they gave me 9 tiny home fries on the side.. The French toast was tasty but no powdered sugar..no fruit.. There is no presentation with any of the food.. Bloody Mary was bland and boring..they charged $1.60 for cream cheese for my bagel, $1.60 for a slice of tomato.. No seafood offerings with breakfast and there were a ton of flies.. Go to Blue Heaven! Or just eat a granola bar and save your money rather eating breakfast at Pepes in Key West..

Pepe's was just ok for me. The snapper was really tasty, but the service was lacking to me. I would possibly give them another try, but there are a lot of other options for a nice dinner here in KW.

Cozy place. Went for breakfast. All homemade meals including a MD favorite - creamed chip beef. I had an omlette with ham and cajun sausage and black bean salsa. All really good. Quick and efficient service. Interesting art work ;)

Just like the other review, don't let the outside sway you! Best BLT, mashed potato and hash brown bake are the best....this is the best breakfast in town!!! Oh, don't waste your time at Blue Heaven- way way overrated! Go to Pepe's

Great place for breakfast. Delicious specials. Be prepared to wait for a little bit because it is so popular and is where all the locals go. Worth the wait.

Wonderful local find. Great service, food is very good. I had the corn beef hash and eggs and a BLT with an egg on top. Mimosas are made with freshly squeezed OJ. Just Note that they stick to the rules of Breakfast until 12 and lunch after 12.

You MUST come here on a Sunday. That is when they have their rib special. They are amazing!! The meat falls off the bones, super tender, great sauce and definitely get the potato salad as a side. Do I need to say more?

The portions are large. We had the small summer menu and could not finish our meal. The food was excellent. The only issue I had was we ordered and then waited 1 hour for our meal to be brought out. We had the Ceaser salad with fish and 1 Chicken breasts with veggies. They are small inside. Much more room outside, but it is summer time and very hot today. Dont let the outside of the building fool you, this place is fantastic inside. If your allergic to cats, stay indoors. They have a cat that hangs out by the tree at the outdoor dining area. The cocktails are great, but a bit pricey.

Pepe's cafe was a pleasant surprise for me. We ordered the raw and baked oyster, shrimp and crab for appetizer, steamed vegetables and fish sandwich for entrees. I did not expect the food to be so fresh and well prepared given the previous review of this place but it was actually really good. They are also one of the oldest food joint in key west so it is worth visiting if you are a history fan.

Five stars for the Key Lime Pie!! We tried all the highly rated pies in KW and this one was THE BEST. Servers were friendly, meals were solid, and it's hard to pick a favorite hot sauce.

There was nothing about this place that I didn't like. The service was nice and prompt, we ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer and they were HUGE and absolutely delicious. I ordered the fresh caught grilled grouper on a Ceasar salad, and my boyfriend got the 12 oz New York strip with asparagus and a baked sweet potato. The steak was SO thick and good. Everything was amazing, the steak came out cooked perfectly, the fish was phenomenal, the salad was large, the asparagus still crispy and good. I loved it!!!

Had good bloody Mary's which seem to be hard to find in key west., so that is a huge win. We also had oysters; spinach parmisan, lemon pepper, and Mexican. They were all great but the spinach parmisan was the best. They have a huge assortment of hot sauce of their own hot sauce so we added that to our bloody Mary's and oyster which took it up another notch.

I've been going to Pepe's for years and it has always been one of my favorite little out of the way hole in the restaurants. Though structure as well as the menu has been somewhat gentrified and lost a lot of its diveyness within the past decade it still has somewhat of a spark to it of what it once used to be. I grabbed a both in the old part of the building, which though having been considerably spruced up over the years, still has a good deal of remaining character about it. I ordered the grilled mahi mahi, was formerly listed on the menu many years ago simply as grilled dolphin. No doubt the change in names was made so as not to confuse the tourists between dolphin the mammal (read "Flipper") and dolphin the fish. Of course the name mahi mahi does sound more upscale and in some restaurants the name change was made in order to justify a phony price increase. The mahi maki came nicely grilled with a good taste about it but nothing exceptional, however, I also ordered the roasted Mexican styled oysters, which were a real hit with me; totally delicious and the basis of me awarding Pepe's with Four Stars as well as continuing to be a fan of the place.

This place ist the best!!! I go there every time I visit the Keys. (4 times now) Always for breakfast. Best breakfast I've ever had (and I love breakfast). If you are ever down there - VISIT THEM

Here's the deal with this classic hole in the wall: the food is just ok. Yes the place is kind of cool with the cat, the nude above the fireplace, the old photos and the stories of the history of the place on the menu....but the mahi-mahi was fresh but uninspired, I had it served "Pepe style" which means covered in melted cheese with tomatoes and celery under the cheese, it was ok but nothing I'd crave or order again, my sweet potato was badly over baked and by far the smallest I'd ever seen (yo Pepe when the vegetables aren't of restaurant quality, don't serve them)!!!! My wife's steak was very good according to her, but for $28 should a restaurant serve the steak and mashed potatoes on the same small dinner plate? I just found the place to be sort of cool and sort of ok!

    (3)
  • Zaidoon A.

The food was terrible. I ordered a steak, it was overcooked and dry. The asparagus was undercooked and hard. Not value for the bill at all whatsoever. The mojito was weak and the service was so so. Would not come back at all. If I can give zero stars I would have.

Food - good and fresh. Atmosphere - cute little outdoor cafe area - nice. Service - not so much. I was there for dinner so that may have been the problem - will try another time for breakfast and see what happens.

You can sit in or outside here, and the patio was a pretty happenin' spot. I had the BLT with a macaroni salad which was fairly good, as well as their homemade key lime pie (yum!).

I had the Filet and my wife had Mahi Mahi. We're glad we went there, but the service was ok at best. The food was good, but our waiter was just ok. Really cool history in the restaurant though. The bathrooms were DISGUSTING, but what do you expect when it's a 100+ year old building.

Heard this was a spot that Truman like to frequent himself. Had a great time enjoying the local fare as well as oysters freshly flown in from Louisiana-had the medley. Overall a great experience.

Heard its a great place to eat even the locals recommended it. My boyfriend and his family were here two years ago and was impressed about so they want to go back and have breakfast. We went back and Big time disappointment ! The server is also a space cadet !

Pepes was my families favorite place to eat at key west. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was wonderful and cozy. We all had the blackened grouper after hearing about it on yelp, and it lived up to its expectations of being phenomenal. The key lime pie at pepes is the best on the island. Go to pepes before any other seafood restaurant.

Enjoyable! You have the option to eat inside (blah) or ourside on an almost-completely covered patio. We opted for the uneven-floored patio and had a delicious meal. I went for the bacon-wrapped filet, black and blue style (they blacken it and melt blue cheese on top) and with the mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus I thought I was in heaven. My wife got the NY strip and I have to say, after tasting hers, that I preferred the strip as it was melt in your mouth delicious. Yeungling drafts were only $1.50 (which I didn't know before ordering) so my three drafts set me back a cool $4.50. Dessert was apple crisp w/ice cream and coconut creme pie, both made in-house, and they were good but not too sweet (I like sweet!). Our server was friendly and helped us with the menu, so all in all it was a great way to end our Florida Keys vacation and I would consider coming back the next time we're in town.

Its near the boat marina and in a non descript area but just another pocket of cool stores around it!! Its super casual...feel like your sitting in someones backyard! There is a cat in a hammock up near the ceiling and brick pavers on the floor. Love this laid back feel! Everything we ordered was great. our neighbors were raving about some scrambled egg with Crab cake and another french toast concoction with berries looked amazing!! We had eggs...boring us!! When you enter, go in through the patio even though it says "exit"...if you go in the front door, you are right in the middle of some "close together" tables and feels awkward. you end up waiting on the patio anyway for table. It was packed when we went but moved quickly and the food came out quickly. Julie was our server and was wonderful! Attentive, quick and thorough! Great little spot for sure!!

Here for a bachelor party weekend and then some. Had to do stop at PePe's for some breakfast food to soak up the beverages from the night before. French toast, bacon and my favorite corn beef hash! Go visit! Great people working there. Wonderful Key West atmosphere and a buddy of mine enjoyed his delicious Bloody Mary. Enjoy!!!

    (5)
  • Ted L.

Always a favorite of mine for breakfast (thanks in part to the fresh-squeezed mimosa's and screwdrivers) I always forget about it for dinner. Pepe's is one of the all-around solid old-school places in Old Town Key West. When you go, try to sit at the bar... you can eat breakfast, lunch or dinner there and there is always an interesting mix of folks -- both regulars and tourists. I generally eat breakfast here a couple days week since I stopped drinking, which I thought would be a challenge, but hasn't been. I love the food, I love the service and I love the atmosphere. There is always a new special omelette of the day as well as a french toast/pancake special. Always try the bread of the day (made fresh by my baker-buddy Ms. Charley) and if they have potato patties, order them. They are in short supply, and made from the mashed potatoes from the night before. They mix in a little sour cream, chives, flatten them out and pan sear them in a cast iron skillet. In my mind, far better than Blue Heaven, Harpoon Harry's or Camille's... they just never seem to change the menus. Every morning at Pepe's is a fresh day.

don't waste your time when the Cuban Coffee Queen is right across the way - the food was average and the service was terrible. The older woman there was so rude to us - though obviously friendly to others in our vicinity - we couldn't figure out what we did wrong, but if looks could kill we'd be dead! I had two over easy eggs with bacon and a bagel and my boyfriend had the french toast special - both were fine, nothing crazy and definitely not worth another trip back. blah.

  • Josie K.

This was really good. Low key, local atmosphere, nice service. All the food was fresh and simply prepared. Prices were a little high, especially on one special we ordered, and on desserts (which were delicious... But pricier than we expected). Outdoor seating on a covered patio was just right.

During my last trip to Key West (which was my honeymoon actually), we finally gave Pepe's a try. I remember the first time I came to Key West, one of my friends gave me some recommendations of places to try and she said she had the best burger of her life here at Pepe's. Somehow that stuck in my head. From the outside, it looks like a shed, but they got a great outdoor area underneath some trees. We ordered sandwiches and beers. Pepe's had lagers for only $2-$3 so they win for the cheapest place to get a beer in Key West. Pepe's is mostly known for their steaks and their breakfast/brunch, but my favorite thing about Pepe's: their key lime pie. It was served in a bowl with a generous amount of whipped cream on top and I liked that it didn't look like a perfect piece of pie. The key lime filling was nice and tart and so light and fluffy too! The Key Lime pie was so good that we came back on our last night for more pie (and steaks). I didn't realize till about a week ago, but they have the recipe ONLINE. I'm gonna have to try it at home now.

Pepe's. How do I LOVE thee? Let me count the ways..... fresh squeezed OJ/Grapefruit juice for mimosas, screwdrivers, greyhounds for breakfast. (3) Specials, specials & more specials (6). Great service, food & atmosphere - inside & outside (9). It's casual - shorts, tank tops & sandals (12). Near Duval street, near the docks, near Kermit's Key Lime store (15). oh and I ADORE the peep holes so you can look in (or out) of the outdoor seating area. (16). Roosters roaming (17). Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner (20). I could go on & on. But I won't. I think you get the picture..... You CANNOT come to Key West and NOT eat/drink at Pepe's. You HAVE to go to Pepe's..........If you haven't been to Pepe's - you haven't been to Key West..........

Great and friendly service. Cozy and not too noisy, some tables inside that are either booth or table. Seating on the patio smoky by the way if you give a crap about your health. The dinner menu has limited choices but, good ones. I ordered the chop steak dinner with potato and broccoli. ($14 for 5oz., or $17 for 9 oz.) Karen is having the fish sandwich. ($11-12) They bring cornbread that was okay. Tip for the chef - add corn and sugar plus darken in oven a bit to make the cornbread jump on your tastebuds. The food was great. Generous portions, the fish (Mahi) blackened was moist and fresh, broccoli was fresh and crisp. Baked potato was good with sour cream. We decided to try breakfast as well. French toast was good. Here is where you will get confused and pay $10 for an omlette: the base price for the omlette is $5.50, that is the egg and toast (that is not what I call an omlette) each thing you add is $1.50 more. It was a large omlette and very filling. Tip: order the homefries well done. They were nice and crispy... all in all good place. For any meal just on the high end for what I am used to. Welcome to Key West...

  • Molly T.

Breakfast was the best! French toast topped with graham cracker crumbles, a sweet cream cheese sauce and then topped with blackberries and pineapple. Lunch was 2nd best with a double stacked portabella mushroom sandwich with homefries...real homefries. Atmosphere hasn't changed much in 100 years they say. Food came out quick, service was awesome (little old lady service is the best :) and the decor makes you want to wander the place for hours. This is a must while you are in keywest!

We were only in Key West for a couple of hours so we stopped here for our carefully chosen (thanks to all the reviews on here) key lime pie. And, thank you Yelp - you did not disappoint this time! We loved every minute in this place. We got there at about 4:10 pm, just after they've stopped serving lunch - but just in time for an oyster race! Confused, we sat down and our very friendly server (I think his name was Ray) told us we had only 2 food options at this time- key lime or coconut pie. We ordered a slice of the key lime and enjoyed every last bit of it. As they started to make announcements for the oyster race - we decided we'd stick around for our chance at $75 and ordered another piece of pie (this time coconut). My husband liked this one even better. It was delicious, but a bit heavier and I had really enjoyed the creaminess of the key lime pie. The oyster race was exciting (even though neither of us won). Their shucker got my oyster open in just over a second!! Fun times :) We just really loved the ambience and general feel of this place. Great memory of key west to walk away with! (the pie is expensive, $7 a slice is fine though...I'm pretty sure it's all from scratch!)

We love this place and visit repeatedly. It's not the most creative menu, but they do specials that take things up a notch. And the blackened fish is fabulous The fresh squeezed OJ is also great for drinks! We travel with dogs and the service and welcome is excellent. This is a very comfy place with lots of locals, so they don't do the tourist razzle dazzle. If you are tired of over-priced foo-foo this is the place to go for honest homey cooking in a very cool older building with tropical patio.

  • Sam C.

Pepe's uses fresh ingredients; now, if they could only get a chef who knows how to cook! Melted cheese on an otherwise excellent piece of mahi-mahi is a "specialty" !?!? No seasoning on anything?! A tiny baked potato?! The key lime pie is more like a key lime cheesecake, not bad, but not really that good. We had a so-so $20 meal...too bad it cost $60! Can't give them more than 2 stars, and that's mostly for their history and atmosphere plus the use (really abuse) of fresh ingredients.

Right off the ferry from ft. myers I was dying for some food. This time I headed for Pepe's. Had the mahi mahi sandwich special. Very yummy, cooked just right. The best part was the fried potatos that came with it. Who ever made those knows how to put a good crust on fried potatoes. Very yummy, just want I needed to get primed up for the start of my key west stay. Really I want to give it a 3 1/2 stars as it is better than the things I usually rate 3 stars but not really up to 4 star. A good solid place. But probably is not going to rock your world. Service was good and the waiter a nice guy who knew his job. Prices are about what you would expect at that end of key west. oh yeah, the ice tea was extra yummy!

I don't give 5 stars easily, but this place gets it easily. This is the best hole-in-the-wall place in the whole State of Florida, no doubt. Ribs are delicious, staff is friendly, and the drinks are cold! If you judge this place by it's looks, you don't deserve to experience such a divine meal. I've been coming here every summer since for like 9 years, I came here for my 21st birthday and the cook bought me my first legal drink! Yessss :D

The family was in the mode for a burger and/or sandwich and this place fit the bill. The service was great and the burgers were best we had in the Keys. I really liked that they brought us pitchers of the soda, tea, etc, we were drinking and they had every possible sauce, condiment you needed at your table. The key lime pie is one of the best we had in the Keys, and the best we had in Key West. We had mission to find the best Key Lime pie during our trip and in about 10 different pies during our stay, we ranked this #2. Good food, good prices, and good service.

Great food at reasonable Key West prices. We have never been to Pepe's for anything other than breakfast. Great omelets and homemade breads. Kids loved the French toast. We make it a point to eat here every time we visit. The service is always friendly and efficient. We'd give it a 5 if there was a larger selection on the menu (though we realize the kitchen is small) and the place was given a good dusting every so often.

This was my first strip ever to Key West, and I thought it was an amazing thing just to be able to hear Havana Radio from teh AM stations. I found out that I can also listen to it through regular internet radio. haha. As I was going down there, I promised myself that I was going to get the best of both worlds....The surf and turf. The whole time taht I was walking down Duvall St, I kept picturing myself enjoying a nice succulent steak with a nice succulent lobster, or any other seafood derivative. My frat brother and I stumbled upon this very local and popular place that sold conch fritter bites, and they recommended us to this place. We had seen the other restaurants' menus on the sidewalk, but some were a bit too expensive. When we arrived here, we were plesantly surprised, not only by the taste of the food, but the prices. I ordered the 14 oz NY strip steak medium well, with a side of mashed potatoes and asparagus. Pretty simple, and not quite surf and turf, right? Well, let me tell you. This was one of the best dinners I have had in a long time. The steak was cooked to perfection, the mashed potatoes were creamy and fluffy with a very indulgent gravy on topm, as well as the asparagus that complemented the plate perfectly. My fb got the snow crab claws as appetizers, but I didn't really care too much for them. He got the fish, which was prepared nicely and without much fuzz. The weather was a bit cool for the seson that night, but even with that, sitting outside was a pleasure. Teh service was really good too. I would totally come back here.

This place did have some pretty good food. But with all the amazing places to eat in KW, this place has alot of competition. The locals all seemed to love this place and everyone recommended it so we went. And dont get me wrong, the food was good, just not on the same level of some of the other choices you have in the area. And , it did hit our wallet HARD! Not bad, just did not live up to the legend.

Classic Key West hole-in-wall with tons of history - photos and images on the walls. Very cute, unique place. I would recommend for breakfast or lunch. I was not that impressed with the food. It's was pretty plain Jane. Staff was friendly and the bloody marys from the cute outside bar were excellent.

On the second night of our weeklong trip to Key West we walked around several blocks trying to find a place that piqued all of our interests to eat at. Both my boyfriend and I had peeked at Pepe's but weren't quite sure so we circled for awhile more before he piped up with "How about we try that Pepe's place?" Step through the narrow opening in the white fence and you think you are entering into a hole in the wall at first, but oh the contrary! You are seated in an adorable little courtyard area with ceiling fans and the nice Key West breeze coming through. Our waitress was very friendly and we quickly and eagerly placed our order. Our tastebuds were soon wowed with their great meat and seafood dishes, coupled with some cocktails and wine. If I could sit in their outdoor area every day enjoying their food I'd be one happy camper! Their breakfast menu looked great as well, though we unfortunately never made it back to try it out. A must do on our next trip to the Conch Republic!

I am not sure why this place is so popular. The food was mediocre, it smelled inside the restaurant, so we sat outside where we were surrounded by flies. When I received my oysters, I found a long strand of hair stuck inside the cheese. The waitress was nice enough to replace my one piece of oyster. I wish I had a better experience!

Best. Key. Lime. Pie. EVER! Try to go on a week day to beat the crowds. By all means, try to avoid going for brunch on a Sunday, the customer service is so bad, you'll never want to come back but since the key lime pie is worth it, dont skip this place during the week.

  • Megan M.

What are you yelpers who gave this joint 5 stars smoking? Send some my way, please! First, we arrived at Pepe's after having big deliberations on where to brunch. It looks pretty crappy, but we chalked this up to "history," next time we'll chalk it up to just being crappy. We waited like 30 minutes to get sat and ordered some breakfast from our not-so-friendly server. It took a while for it to come out, and as we waited, we watched a server bring out an order of Canadian bacon, see something she apparently didn't like on it, brush it off, and flip it over, then serve it. I realize this probably happens everywhere, but maybe don't do it in plain sight at least! Things wrong with this: 1. We saw her bussing tables seconds later, then serving food and not washing her hands. So I doubt she washed before touching the food. 2. If there was something wrong so she thought the meat needed to be flipped over, why wouldn't she get a new order instead of hiding something unsatisfactory?? Ick! At this point, we were hungry, so we decided to pretend servers don't do shit like that to our food and move on. When ours arrived, none of it was hot. I got bacon, eggs and toast, which was supposed to come with potatoes, but somehow those got lost in the shuffle. The bf got eggs and toast, blueberry pancakes and potatoes, but somehow his toast got lost in the shuffle. Not impressive. Neither was the food. The bacon was good, the eggs and bread were fine, the potatoes were extremely underseasoned and undercooked, and the blueberry pancakes tasted like crap. They were flavorless and packed with formerly frozen blueberries, which clearly tasted defrosted. After tasting the food, we just wanted to get out of there, but service was slow so it took a while to leave. This place was just gross. I guess it retains some business based on history, but I certainly won't be returning!

Overrated. Came here due to all the great Yelp reviews and you'd figure it must be great if it's been around since 1909. However, it was just ok. Cool homey little place in Key West and has a nice relaxed feel compared to the many other commercialized restaurants on Duval St. Lots of nice outdoor seating (as long as no birds poop on you - many of the tables are under trees). Pepe's steak sandwich ($12.95) - 3.5 stars. Supposedly one of their signature items - a bun came loaded with juicy-looking chucks of sirloin with onions and green peppers. Unfortunately there wasn't much taste to the meat so had to add lots of pepper and ketchup. Rahter disappointing. Also their homemade potatoes were supposedly great but disappointed due to lack of flavor. Thank god for the invention of ketchup. Blackened grouper sandwich ($11.50) - 2.5 stars - can you say "Where's the fish?". On the sandwich bun came a couple of wimpy little pieces of grouper and they were DROWNED in some type of thousand island/russian sauce. The fish was not blackened at all and I wish they didn't drown it with so much sauce. The fish was very fresh though... if you carved away the mound of sauce. After eating this puny amount of fish, I left still hungry and eyed the B.O.'s Fish Wagon across the street. Service was nice and pretty responsive but felt that the young guy who waited on us should go into selling cars since he was so great at making average food sound so wonderful. Bottom line: Great outdoor breakfast/lunch atmosphere and history but the food is overrated. And stay away from the bathrooms - pretty nasty.

I hate it when other people do this because it serves no purpose, other than to warn you of the dangers of island life. I did get to try the food. We waited for a table for 20 minutes, and then sat down and promptly ordered at 12:16pm. We walked out of the restaurant without any food at 1:23pm. Disappointing, because the food did look good, but we had somewhere to be. Oh, and I'm hoping it was a bad time of the month because the waitress was a straightup Biatch with a capital B. We think we were leaving when the food was just about ready too... lol. I got a free coke. Maybe I should have given it two stars. If ownership sees this review, bill me for it.

Loved it. Everything is straightforward with Pepe's. It is good for people watching as well. It's like that some of the people who gave low ratings were identical to the drama queens that came on the same day as I did. We had a chance to witness a few events during our breakfast. While Pepe's is a great spot to eat, the host is drama adverse in a subtle way. If you're rude, self important or slightly obnoxious, he will avoid you and go stand in front of the fan near the bar to chill. It looks like a family business, they aren't hurting for business and could do without the bs. There's a wait and the space is small so controlling your kids and dogs would be ideal. There are children's books near the bar for the wait. Large strollers may be difficult to navigate so be mindful of other diners. On Memorial Day, the wait was 30 minutes. I came back after a walk and a cordito at the Cuban Coffee Queen. I waited a short time and was seated after informing the host of my return. We placed our order with Barbara. She was pleasant, but didn't overdo it. There were no upcharges or nonsense. She listed the specials and recommended the coconut bread, which was included with the special. I got the special which was an omelet with roasted onions, cheese, portabella mushrooms and Cajun sausage with marinara sauce. Yummy! The bread of the day, coconut was indeed a hit. No need to track anyone down for condiments. It's all there at the table. Our meal total was $23.00. No drinks because it was too freakin hot, but Barbara left a small pitcher of H2O.

This place is cute in a quaint local way. The omlettes were okay, but the most memorable items on the menu are the daily fresh baked bread (today was key lime) and freshly squeezed orange juice. If I have the opportunity to return, all I'm going to get is the daily bread. This stuff is like crack.

The food was a little bland and dry. The service was ok but to find the host to put your name on this list was comical. I will not recommend eating here as my first option. Actually would of had a better breakfast in my hotel.

  • Buddy S.

Bottom line....this place kicks ass! Food is great, drinks are fresh (all the fruit is freshly squeezed) and the staff is great. A Key West icon and staple.

Enjoyed everything, but not wowed by anything. Service was indifferent.

Nice place with a lot of history (it claims to be over 100 years old, and the building and outdoor courtyard look it). Service was prompt and efficient, if not particularly warm/fuzzy (server seemed a bit annoyed I asked for her to run down the fish selections a second time, and when I asked her what SHE would have, her answer was, "everything is good and everything is homemade." Which may be correct, but kinda nonresponsive.) Had the blackened mahi-mahi sandwich with mac salad. The sandwich was fantastic, popping with flavor (much better than others I've had in Southwest Florida), and the mac salad was excellent (especially with a little extra pepper). My Bloody Mary was unmemorable. If I visit Key West again, I'll want to sit out on the patio courtyard, which is very nice.

Great breakfast, a little pricey, but well worth it! Fresh oj, mimosas are sooo tasty, the staff is great, thanks for all the great reviews from everyone, it was definitely worth the short trip to a great meal!!!

  • Sarah Q.

We are giving it 5 stars for breakfast( we only ate 1 meal there) drinks were very good. I had the bloody Mary and my fiancé had the mimosa. I ordered the cream cheese and scallion omelet served with Key Lime bread! That was very tasty!!

We felt like we found this place last time 6 years ago. It was much more crowded now. We had dinner last time and lunch this time. The fish was fresh and good. And we bought our Tshirts too. But we might try someplace else next visit. But only because there are so many to try. But if you've never been here, I highly recommend it for a cool little place for drinks and good food.

Nothing special. I think they get a lot of traffic because it's an older facility. We had the French Toast and an Omelette; we had better breakfast at the hotel.

Worth the inevitable wait ! Breakfast is the best we found in key west. Love the creamed corned beef on toast.

  • Mark T.

Had breakfast at Pepe's about 11AM on a Sunday. 45 minute wait list, but got a seat at the bar in around 25 min. Bartender was super friendly and approachable. Fresh squeezed orange and grapefruit juice - right in front of you! Had mimosas, then was introduced to greyhounds for the first time - grapefruit juice and vodka - a new favorite! The food was excellent. Generous portions. Bread of the day was coconut and delicious. Corned beef hash was great. Loved the place, gotta check it out!

If yelp had half stars I would give a 3.5 only because I thought it was a little pricey. The fish sandwich was good my husband and I both had the same thing. He had a mojito with fresh lime juice and liked it but it was 8$ and relatively small. I had a fruit smoothie... not bad. Happy hour here is good though, half off drinks which would make it totally worth the visit had we timed it right.

  • Dave P.

3.5 Stars. Yelp needs to allow half stars! This is quintessentially Key West! In business since 1909, and it looks like it! Sit close to the door in case a spark ignites the place. It will go up quicker than last years Christmas tree! We never miss going here. Again and again. I cant comment on lunch or dinner, but the breakfast is exactly what its supposed to be. Prepared well, good portions, and tasty! Always friendly smiling faces to wait on us as well. They always have an interesting breakfast special that usually doesn't disappoint. Get the homefries! Huge chunks of taters and crisped up on a flat top grill. My only negative about breakfast is the cocktails. I've tried the bloody marys. No good. I'm picky when it comes to cocktails. I asked for it made with V8 or tomato juice, no mix please. It came out and I'm not sure what it was but it had no flavor other than vodka. OK, no worries. Next time I opted for a screwdriver. Fresh squeezed OJ. It came out and it was very weak. Oh well, I'll just stick to breakfast! We also go for happy hour. Were else on the island can you get the same friendly service and drink $1 yuengling drafts? Love it! This place has stood the test of time for a reason. Give it a whirl. Don't expect a fancy place, or even fine dining. Just good solid food and good service. They have kept it simple and it works.

Pretty good food. . Went there for lunch one day and for Thanksgiving Dinner during our stay in November 08. Had the baked oysters and they were amazing. Thanksgiving dinner required about a 2 hour wait. It was basically home style food and nothing elaborate but boy it was good. We sat at the bar the whole wait and watched most of the Cowboys/Patriots playoff game. Bar was very busy but service was tight. Got quite saucy by dinner so our meal was just what the Doctor ordered... If you are in town, it is worth a visit. If you are a fan of BIG Box chains and stores, you probably won't think much of the joint. But if you prefer small homegrown places, then this is a gem among many. Expect regular food without all the flair like you'd find at Cheesecake Factory. Eating in the indoor/outdoor bar/dining area was great and for your belly and history's sake you should check it out.

MUST MUST MUST have a slice of key lime pie here, and a margarita on the rocks... Hands down, THE BEST most NATURAL things in old key west. None of this tourist drivel here. 1.50 draft beer (Budweiser American Ale, hey you just want a buzz cheap right, you want good beer, head to Finnegan's Wake) but if you want to not feel like a tourist, pepe's is the spot.

  • Keith F.

An absolute must for breakfast/brunch. Their French toast is always a specialty with custom toppings of fruit and homemade cream sauces. Top it off with fresh squeezed OJ and 50% off for those on uniform! Only low point is not much seating room. So plan to wait a while on busy mornings.

This place has great simple food. And a great atmosphere. On a recent visit, we had delicious fish with mounds of nice veggies and crab claws. It was absolutely perfect. Not to much food and we felt healthy when we left.

It took us 3 trips to get in the first 2 days there was an 30-45 wait for breakfast so we decide to go else where. but the third time was a charm to be honest I was expecting more but it was OK

My wife gave me a funny look as we approached this restaurant. "Are you sure you want to eat here?", she said. Yes, from the outside it looks like a dump but it's Key West. Only in Key West can one get away with this ambience. We were greeted immediately by a very excited waiter that seated us. He made great recommendations on what to try. The grouper sandwich and pink shrimp wrap were delicious. We didn't encounter any roosters running around but there were some small birds flying about. This didn't bother us at all but thought I'd mention it. I would love to go back someday and next time I'll have to try their key lime pie.

Beautiful Breakfast place, in a garden setting of an 100 year old spanish home. We loved the ambiance and service. Food was good. We ordered their specials that day. French Toast topped Blueberry and strawberry sauce and Fresh Mangoes/Pineapples. YUMM !! My husband ordered their omelette, which was good as well. I will definitely go back there. This place was recommended to us by a locale, and we checked yelp for reviews. I really enjoyed the breakfast in that small cute garden.

Skip if you don't like naked women. Trust me on this. Lighting inside is poor but some will call that ambience. Chicken florentine and pork chops were good. Enjoyed the blackened Mahi. Key lime was decent. Cuban coffee ice cream was awesome even though it didn't taste like Cuban coffee to me. Service nice, decent parking across street. A little bit away from busy downtown.

What happened? Pepe's had been staple of Key West dining since our first visit nearly 20 years ago. The drill was always the same - crowded, long waits for a table, edgy waitstaff, and they were doing you a favor if you were seated and actually served a meal. And God forbid should you have the temerity to bring kids - waitresses would snarl at you. But the food was always good, 10 minutes into service the waitstaff would chill and all was right at your table. Check would come, the waitress might even smile, you'd catch a finger in the mousetrap contraption as you passed cash or a card to cover the damages. Off you went - breakfast, lunch or dinner. This evening, we stopped in for dinner with 2 kids in tow. We got all of the attitude, but no wait. But wait....no wait. Friday night 7:30 no wait??? Never happened before. As I sat there thinking about our many, many experiences here, it finally dawned on me. This is the same, tired set piece I remembered from many years ago. And the food was not nearly as good. I love familiar, but a slave to the same old same old - no. I'm not suggesting a Thai menu or carpeting. I LOVE the eclectic atmosphere of Pepe's and would not suggest a change. In fact I still don't like the change they made in the fence along Caroline street where they've added a second entrance several years ago. No, let's clean up the food, learn how to plate, add a special where you actually describe it and state the price, re-think portion size for a more healthy offering (nothing worse than bad food and lots of it). A generous 3 stars and a fond hope that someone in management might consider how this icon of Key West dining might evolve and thrive.

This is typical Key West without being a tourist trap, Show up with minimal clothing and flip-flops and your in. Great pulled pork sandwiches and outstanding margaritas. You go Pepe!

The best raw oysters in Key West. My boyfriend and I loved their homemade cocktail sauce so much that we ate it with a spoon when the oysters were gone. It had crunchy onions or shallots in it and was more like a horseradish-y salsa than a cocktail sauce. We ordered a dozen oysters then ordered a dozen more! It was half-off happy hour after all! Our dogs also sat with us in their outside bar area and were not only welcomed but were brought there own separate water bowls. LOVE it!! :)

  • Morgan K.

This is a basic restaurant with simple food and a cool outdoor dining area. The menu just looks like a typical American restaurant, beef, chicken, fish, but the food was good, as well as the service. We had an oyster sampler appetizer which was very tasty. We ate caribbean style chicken with rice and beans, and steak with mashed potatoes. We ordered one dessert that we didn't like, so the waitress immediately brought us something else which was much better- key lime pie. There was not much on the menu for lunch, mostly sandwiches. I read it was good for breakfast, but haven't tried it yet. The atmosphere is what is unique here: the outdoor seating area is covered by a canopy of tree branches and leaves. There was actually a cat climbing one of the trees while we ate there. It was like eating in a private garden.

The Grouper and Mahi Mahi sandwiches were absolutely delicious. We had a group of nine in our party; everyone in our party loved their food. We chose to sit inside during lunch; unfortunately the indoor dining area smelled like sweat. Despite the odor I highly recommend this place.

Love Pepe's. It's the place I want to go first when I get into town. I obsess over the fresh fish sandwich and love to add the Liquid Summer sauce they have. Wash that down with a rum or something with juice (their juices are killer) and take in the ambiance of what feels like an old hole the wall that locals and visitors alike love. Ironically we also had Thanksgiving dinner there too and I'll put it up against the best Tday dinner I've ever had, including the ones my grandmothers use to make.

Pepe's has Thanksgiving every Thursday! It is a great place to have cocktails. Of course, it is busy, but what are you in a rush for.... your fly fishin' appointment, happy hour or your date with some sunscreen poolside?

Great local place. I wasn't in he mood for fish, so got the veggie plate and it was delicious--corn on the cob and mashed potatoes were super. My dad and sister got fish dishes and were both very satisfied with their meals. The key lime pie was excellent!

  • Jeffrey W.

In a word; disappointed. This place was recommended by a local. The restaurant is interesting and has a long history, but the food was just mediocre at best. The small menu consists mainly of steaks and seafood. Our server said they were known for their steaks. I ordered the New York Strip and while it wasn't bad, it also wasn't great. For the prices, I just expected better. Also, the baked potato was overcooked and pretty much inedible. They brought out another that was only slightly better. Long story short, I probably won't be coming back here.

We waited sooooo long to get into this place for breakfast. 45 minutes! But, we had to try it. I ordered their special of the day- crab cake benedict. It was good. My husband enjoyed their corned beef hash. I think it gets more hype than it should. Pepe's is right down the street from Harpoon Harrys. I prefer Harpoon Harrys. :)

Would not have found or stepped in this place if not for yelp. Best fish we have had in our 3 days here, including ritzier restaurants. Fish was fresh, we liked the blackened grouper and mahi mahi sandwiches. Tried the key lime pie ($7 is somewhat high) based on other yelps - we all liked it and thought was one of the best we've had. Not too tart - perfect! Would recommend this place and hope we can try breakfast here when we return.

Oh how I love Pepe's. In town for just a few hours and had to visit the courtyard bar. As usual the other patrons were the entertainment. Will post pics later. Have eaten here before, both breakfast and dinner. Always a solid meal. It's not blow your doors off crazy but consistently well prepared. To the prior reviewer stating that "creamy" clam chowder is Manhattan style, that's incorrect. New England chowder is the creamy chowder. Manhattan is tomato based.

Our planned brunch at Pepe's was changed to lunch after a long night on Duval. A bloody and a Slit Ray Burger was just what we needed to cure the Key West hangover. It's a for sure dive but also a for sure can't miss.

Not much to look at on the outside but inside is a real old school diner circa 1920. Cool atmosphere and good food. I had pepes steak omelet with a couple spicy bloody Marys. My wife had a veggie omelet with a side of bacon, potatoes and a couple mimosas. Everything for $64 including tip. Good service too

Note that this review is ONLY for the key lime pie. My friend and I had a tasting spree of key lime pies around key west and decided this one is the clear winner! Pepe's seems to be one of the few places still hand making pies that don't resemble a commercial line of stamped out crust and green goo farted out if a big machine topped with high fructose corn syrup ready for mass consumption. So my friend and i stopped by just for dessert and werent greeted with some gaffawed expression when one stops by a full service restaurant for only dessert. They quickly gave us a table with a smile and duscussed the pie we were so eagerly searching. It's served in a bowl which annoyed me at first but it didn't matter after the first mouthful! Such a delicate little creation by the chef! It was just perfect: creamy, but held it's form without having that aforementioned gelatinous goo texture of so many other pies we tried, tangy but sweet enough to let you know it was freshly made AND without chunks of lime zest to mar the texture. The topping was whipped cream so light and fluffy--while I do prefer the merangue version! In summary, don't go to blond giraffe or Kermet or Marie calandars or that other brand that does "singles" in the grocery store, support the local guys and get pepe's key lime pie! Plus they nearly always have other creamy pies on hand as well! Better yet have dinner AND the pie!!

  • Hunter S.

I got the eggs benedict and my mom got pancakes and grits. The hollandaise sauce on the eggs was great, however the ham was a bit chewy. Also, my portion of potatoes was very slim, about 5 or 6 bites. There was nothing special about my mom's pancakes or grits. I was hoping for some sort of syrup selection or different kids of fruits implemented into the pancakes. A boy can dream, I suppose... All in all, the atmosphere is great, and the pricing is reasonable. Nothing to write home about... But I guess something to Yelp about. Would like to come back and try lunch and dinner options.

I have been coming here for a couple of years now. This is one of our favorite places to eat. You won't be disappointed at all We both had breakfast here and it was amazing. Great prices and huge portions. Well worth it! I had the Eggs Benedict. You could have your eggs anyway you want. It was so great! Mmm, good! Yummy for your tummy. Coffee was was great and piping hot! The staff was very knowledgeable about the specials and all. The decor is very unique with the pictures from when they started the restaurant. You could also order for lunch and Pepe's has a wide variety of food. If your looking for a place to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner this is it. Always a fun experience and the staff always friendly. I highly recommend this place for breakfast! Great with your group of friends.

A good breakfast place. It's cozy and can be cramped. The outside seating is fun, the decoration is quirky too. Try the daily bread, its always a hit. The place can get super packed in the morning. If you are a big breakfast person its worth the wait. I however, usually get very little for breakfast so its a lot of food for me. But in the land of tourists, its a hit.

A favorite breakfast stop whenever in KW. Dining outside is charming on the shaded brick patio. Each morning a different special bread is offered. Order a serving it is always worth it. My favorite is coconut but have not had one yet that wasn't delicious. Nice sized portions. The service is good and bathrooms clean.

How could I not have reviewed Pepe's? On our last trip to KW in June, we stopped at Pepe's about an hour and a half after breakfast not because we were hungry, but because we were leaving the island and had heard such great things about it that we couldn't leave without trying it! Since we were still pretty full from breakfast at Sarabeth's we shared the sandwich special of the day, which was blackened grouper topped with sauteed onions, roasted peppers and jack cheese. We were a little iffy about the cheese but let me tell you, that sandwich rocked! The side of cole slaw was pretty good too. I can still taste it today! The waitress tempted us with a coconut cream dessert and it was delicious. I can't remember what it was exactly, but it was divine. We are going back to the lower Keys this weekend and I'm hoping we'll stop at Pepe's for a bite.

This place is the greatest! Looks like a hole in the wall. Take a seat at the bar in the outdoor area. You can peek through the big white fence and watch everyone walking by and missing out. Get any drink where they use their fresh squeezed juice. My wife and I kept getting the vodka and grapefruit juice. Delicious. Get a dozen of the baked oysters. Oh man.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. The line is long for breakfast so get thier early while everyone else is sleeping off their hangover. But the food is great and the bar is open for breakfast. It's exactly what a Key West divey breakfast joint should be.

  • Megan S.

Went here for breakfast which wasn't bad at all. I had a "make your own" omelette. My father had the special of the day omelette & mom had the French toast. We all enjoyed what we had, but it wasn't that particularly memorable. Don't waste your time on the home fries - kinda bland. All in all, not bad, just wishing for something a little better.

Every time we go to Key West we usually have breakfast at Blue heaven, but one morning it was so pack they told us 80 min wait. We decided to leave and started asking the locals where to go for breakfast, and they suggested Pepe's. Boy, was glad to find this place... It's Amazing!!!!!!!!!!! we waited like 15 min to be seated, started with some mimosas, they serve the usual American breakfast, but they have different specials every day as well as a different homemade bread, those are unbelievable. the service was outstanding. Everything about this place was great. You can eat outside in the patio, bring your dog if you have one, they are welcome; or you seat inside. they also have a full bar and the prices were pretty standard. loved, loved.. If you are visiting Key west this place is a must..

$1 draft, $5 margaritas, half price oysters (raw or cooked) makes Pepe's happy hour one of the best in Key West. Grouper with plantain butter with asparagus was so delicious! This was our first dinner at Pepe's after so many great breakfasts. Always smart service & great food. Wish we lived closer so we could be "regulars".

Decided to try a change from Harpoon Harry's and Blue Heaven, both of which I highly recommend. Was not disappointed and will add this to my list of great Key West breakfast locations. Very busy, did not have to wait more than a few minutes, but recommend coming early as it got even busier. Eggs were cooked exactly like they were ordered, the corn beef hash was hot and excellent and the day's homemade bread special melted the butter I spread on it.

The unique, porch-like atmosphere of Pepe's, coupled with its exceptional lunch specials, make this dive on Caroline Street one of my favorite spots in Key West. I frequently duck into the cafe for lunch with high hopes to indulge in my favorite of their "fresh local fish sandwiches;" blackened hogfish topped with a fresh chutney and a bit of swiss cheese. It's an original preparation that delights the most skeptical of fish eaters. Notably, this year marks Pepe's 100th anniversary! So join their celebration by paying them a visit; not so much to try their steak, rather for their spontaneous daily lunch specials.

Missed it last year even though we bought a very cool watercolor painting of the outside for our travel collection. Had to get in this year. Must have caught it on a bad night. This review is for dinner. We got seated right away inside. Waitress was there quickly but we weren't quite ready to order. She must have another table in another county as we didn't see her for a while. We started with the medley of oysters(Mexican, florentine and pepe's) pretty good. I ordered the NY strip, medium rare, baked potato and broccoli. Steak was done medium and average at best with thick line of gristle, not to my liking. Baked potato was overdone with a hard skin and about a quarter inch of the potato inside hard as well. Broccoli was OK. My wife had the mahi with florentine. Said it was uninspired. Fish with a little spinach and crusty Parmesan cheese on top. Oldest daughter had mahi with Pepe's way with celery, tomatoes and onions with melted cheese on top. She liked it but I didn't understand smothering fish with all those toppings... Our youngest had the burger. Said it was good. We finished with Apple crisp that was actually very good. I so much wanted to like it, but we were ultimately disappointed. Must be a better breakfast/brunch location.

We noticed how busy Pepe's was as we were walking by and decided to pop in for a late evening meal. Pepe's doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's wonderfully eclectic inside. We weren't starving so we decided to get Burgers. I had the Fish and my partner had the Beef. I think they came with Potato Salad, but I don't remember. I do remember that we both enjoyed are meals immensely though. We also ordered a half dozen raw Oysters, which were incredible! Just over $6 for big, fresh Oysters! The service was fast and friendly. Great little place that I wish I got to try again before leaving Key West.

First, let me say that the food was truly wonderful. For the food only, I'd give it five stars. But despite its good reputation, for the hole in the wall that it is, I expected at least reasonable prices. When I sat down with my family of six and looked at the menu, I was shocked. This is no two $ restaurant. Other than an $11 burger and $12 salad, everything was $25-40. And not a large menu of options at that. Be educated on the menu before you go and you'll be sure to enjoy it.

  • Tammy Y.

We came here twice for happy hour (the bar is very small but we enjoyed ourselves). We finally made it back for breakfast on our last day. 3 of us had the special of french toast with strawberries/bananas/whip cream and toasted coconut - all of us enjoyed it. 2 people had the special breakfast burrito and also really liked it. The orange juice is expensive but freshly squeezed and delicious (I tasted someone else's as I did not want to spend $4.50 for a glass of OJ).

Fab spot for breakfast . Excellent mimosas. Enjoyed omelette and pancakes while sitting at the bar with my teen aged son. Bartenders were awesome and attentive. Coffee could use an upgrade. Otherwise RUN, don't walk to Pepe's for breakfast.

Only had drinks here - fresh squeezed fruit made for decent cocktails, however bartender boring, not creative and just whined about how tired he was from fantasy fest. Could have been a great start to our first night in Key West. Instead was big disappointment and not worth the walk.

I had the best breakfast I've ever had from this place and I'm not exaggerating. My husband had the western omelet and I got the special of the spinach and crab omelet with roasted red pepper sauce. It was. effing. amazing. Don't go expecting an Ihop sized sprawling plate, but expect a lot of flavor. The corned beef hash was delicious as well-- the best I've ever tasted outside of my mother's kitchen. The whole breakfast was delicious and if I hadn't blown all my money on drinks at the Shores Bar, I'd be going back again tomorrow.

Best breakfast anywhere. French toast of the day is always amazing. This place is over 100 years old and always delivers.

Been coming here for yrs. Love the blackened fish (grouper or mahi mahi) & the BBQ sandwich. Best coconut creme pie we've had on KW. Service can be good or not so good, depending. Fresh squeezed OJ is amazing. You can watch the bartender squeeze it if you sit outside. Watch out for the birds outside. I don't care for them on my table, but fun to watch flit about. Amazingly all the times we've gone there, only been "hit" once. We always sit outside, unless raining.

very neat place, great service, key lime pie was awesome. This would be the perfect place to have dinner when you get back to the West Key Bight Marina. Pork Chops were good, I'd like to go back and try a steak!

Breakfast and dessert are absolute perfection. I can't speak to the lunch/dinner offerings because with the omelettes, pancakes, key lime pie, rum cake, and coconut cake, who has room for anything else? Make sure to come by on Mondays and Fridays at 4 for the Oyster Races. Don't ask, you just have to find out for yourself!

Don't let the three stars fool you,... it was a great place with ambiance. We went there at lunch and I had a couple bloody mary's. There wasn't much "blood" in them. But,... it was sure strong. Don't get me wrong I am a girl that goes for and can handle stiff drinks, but these were just slightly pink Bloody Mary's. We sat in the courtyard and it was pleasant. I think we had a server who partied too much the night before or was new,... so it wasn't the best service,... but it looked like she was trying hard. We had the soup and oysters which were both pretty damn good. If you are passing by and you are hungry you see something that draws you in go for it. You won't be disappointed.

Simply put one of the greatest breakfasts i have ever had . I personally never thought a garlic sauce would be good on an omelette but I was wrong wrong wrong !! Fabulous Bloody Mary's also . The next time to Key West will no doubt include a trip or possibly a couple of trips to Pepes Cafe ..... Yum !!

Delicious and authentic! A very busy restaurant with prompt ,courteous staff! A great choice for breakfast and dinner! Julia is a fabulous waitress !

We were too late to have breakfast, which is what I was hoping for but stopped in for coffee and lunch. Julia was our server and she was awesome, very attentive. Everyone was really, really nice and even though it was after 12, I was still able to have a semi breakfast: English muffin, a 1/4 pineapple (amazing) and some of their homemade granola which was also pretty incredible. Steve had a grilled cheese on rye with bacon and home fries. The Bloody Mary was just spicy enough and the mimosa was fresh squeezed OJ. Well be back this stay for sure!

We stopped for lunch. This place was on my research list because they were going to have a 1$ tap Yeungling(sp) beer and that's good deal for KW. The bar outside was full. We sat outside but not belly upped to the bar. WTH?Did we have to sit at the bar for the special tap beer? They just made more $ by not telling us and charging full price for the drinks. Yikes, really? We asked if there were any drink specials and were told No. Before we ordered sandwiches. One of my friends had the pulled pork sandwich and the other a blt while I went for the fish sandwich "special" of mahi mahi. The fish sandwich had good enough flavor but it came on a smashed hamburger bun, the others had equally unimpressive sandwiches. The cole slaw we all chose needed more salt and pepper then it was good.

You know the food is good when the police dept is just leaving and 3 engines worth of firemen arrive. I had the omelette special and the coconut bread with a mimosa & hubby had the French toast special and the fresh squeezed OJ. We also tried a side of potato cakes - everything was delicious! Go - you won't be disappointed!

Not impressed. If you have no special requests and follow their cookie cutter menu you'll be better off. No accommodations made what so ever for picky eaters. Food was mediocre. Our waitress tried to be nice but had a rude unaccommodating attitude and was not attentive to us at all. She didn't even ask us what sides we wanted - just decided for us. Another waitress we spoke to was absolutely rude and irritated that we even asked for her help. She rolled her eyes and gave dirty looks as she went table to table.

Our server Erin was most definitely the most positive part of our experience at pepe's. She was wonderful. First when we came in no one greeted us and when we had the audacity to seat ourselves at a open table, a "gentleman" came to tell us he was on a 20 min waiting list. I pointed out there was no reception table to ask about seating to which he didn't reply. Great customer service. We got up from the table and I walked down the block while my friend waited. She let me know we had a table 5 mins later in a different section of the restaurant...so much for that waiting list. The entire time we sat the table we had originally choose was never taken. Food was subpar although the mashed potatoes and broccoli were excellent. Also to any ladies please watch your footing as the bar section of the resaurant is extremely uneven and very easy to stumble upon when wearing heels.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. This place is awesome. Came here for breakfast 5/6 days we were down here and the food is excellent. Staff is friendly, fast and really cool. Also nice that they serve mimosas and bloody Mary's!

Pepes was par for the course in terms of a laid back breakfast vibe in Key West. That's not a knock. Anytime people are ordering cocktails on Monday morning like its a weekend, you know it's gonna be good. The cool chick behind the bar referred to my girlfriend as "girl" and that sealed the deal. A great time!

Don't miss 1/2 price oysters at happy hour! Lick em, slurp em, suck em dry! Then have a vodka with grapefruit to please your thirsty pallet. All of the food was great

  • Carol T.

Not a fan! Dinner was overpriced, even for Key West. My hogfish was underseasoned, so basically bland tasting. The asparagus side dish was cooked well, but again, not seasoned with anything. My husband's mahi mahi Pepe's Style was well prepared and tasty. Thus the two stars.

  • Allison B.

Neat place with amazing breakfast. The homemade coconut bread is delicious. Everyday there is a breakfast special that is great. All the locals eat here so you know it's good. Highly recommend as a must while in Key West.

$89.00 dinner for two seems too much....we only have water too ! Nothing in the menu was reasonable price...everything seems expensive..... Yellow fin with rice for $29.00 ??? Steak smothered with pork chops for $40.00 to $50 ( what was that ?) Steaks..NY 8oz or 12oz, FIlet Mignon almost $30.00 (maybe for a white table cloth place) but not for a shack like restaurant sure its the oldest resto in Key West since 1900's yet price seems to be to high class rate (Very 5 star price). Food was OK... nothing like a 5 star high class dinning ambiance/ taste but the prices are !!!

Mediocre food and mediocre service at lunch time. The lentil soup was extremely salty. I liked the quarter pineapple, but overall it was nothing special. The outdoor seating seemed nice but I didn't get to sit out there. They had shirts and hats for sale in the back and just in general seemed like a tourist trap.

Excellent food. The best meal to consume at this location is breakfast. Small restaurant with a lot of clientele. You may have wait on a table, but, it won't take long and you will enjoy the food. Found this place over 10 years ago and try to make a stop when in town. Prices are middle if the road and within the median for the area. It is on the originals for KW.

This place great! We had breakfast Saturday morning the mimosas are good with real orange juice! I had the omelet with fresh veggies! We went back on Sunday for happy hour 1/2 prices oysters omg the baked "Mexican" and "rudi" oysters are AAAmazing......

We were in Key West for a family vacation and wanted to find a good place to eat, off of the main strip. A hole-in-the-wall would be ideal . We walked by Pepe's and thought we found the perfect spot. We were greeted by a bus boy who answered our question of "what's good?" with the disappointing answer of "everything"..(just humor me and recommend and dish. I'm easily sold with a little friendly BS) We started with the seared tuna appetizer and a few cocktails including the mojito and a salty dog. The drinks were watered down and hardly resembled any fruit. The tuna arrived and was pretty tasty. They made up for the sub-par drinks and we assumed we were back on the right track. Until.. The worst thing imaginable when dining out.. A long black hair at the bottom of our tuna dish. Now we understood that this was probably an honest mistake. We brought this to the attention to our waitress, and she initially denied our accusation, and claimed to not see it. We again pointed it out and she swiped the plate, and brought out the check for the drinks. No apologies, but just a goodbye, see ya when I see ya. "We are tourists and probably won't come back." Well we won't. Don't waste your time, on this place! Try Harry's just a block up.

I don't see what is so great here. Maybe we should have gone for breakfast and not lunch. I ordered the grouper reuben with no bread (because I am GF). Got a fish filet on the smallest amount of cole slaw, with swiss cheese melted on it with home fries. The person sitting next to me got one with bread which had twice as much fish and twice as much cole slaw. I would ding them more on the stars but they do fresh squeeze fruit right in front of you at the bar for drinks, and the service at the bar was good. But I think the food is barely 3 stars.

Breakfast was okay (slightly better than mediocre). I would've tried another meal here if we had time. Key lime pie was amazing. The staff was super friendly. Would definitely try again.

  • A P.

It's good, just good. Nothing was off putting, just no WOw factor. It's priced at a point where there should be a Wow factor. Steamed veggies, nothing on them. I had the hog fish. It was nice, on a bed of rice, with broccoli. I want this place to win, I do, because of its lineage and it's legacy. Yelp is going to bury this place if they don't get their act together, seems that many feel the way I do. Margs were too tart, fresh squeezed probably, but definitely sour in it. Service: phenomenal, very knowledgeable and fast. Filet: great texture, not much flavor. Longhorns is better...oops I said it.

5-star reviews is not for the food but for our server. White dude with what sounds like an Irish accent but he's actually from somewhere in America. All i know about him is that he smokes cigarettes and is uber friendly. We LOVED this guy - whoever you are, thank you so much! Other than that, the food was just decent. My date really liked his garlic butter fish and ate all of it. He also loved some beer they had on draft and had like 6 beers, so... I had blackened fish and thought it was average. The mashed potatoes were the best part. I had two glasses of wine, one white and one red, both of which were OK (I was going to say "eh", but they were recommended by our waiter I loved so I am saying "OK" instead - good service really changes everything). We had oysters for appetizers which were good. Other than that I think this is a nice neighborhood joint and slightly off the beaten path but nothing to freak out about or wait in a long line for. Just a nice, comfortable place to dine.

This Pepe guy must be one amazing dude. He has so many places around here naming after him! Wasting a good part of the morning searching for a coffee shop, and now I arrived at Pepe's Cafe right around the time when EVERYONE in Key West come to get a piece of the action. The wait was incredibly long, but when it's the brunch crowd, you really can't help the tables do not open that freely. If I could, even I would have stayed here for the rest of the afternoon, just sipping on the specialty drink, and order every small plate items on the menu. Good thing the witty bartenders and Mango Fizz keep the wait less, waiting. Right before I finally able to grab a free seat at the outside bar in the patio area, I overheard the bartender explained the specialty omelette, with Cuban sausage and Canadian Bacon and the usual omelette fixings. It was incredible food, and that Fizz just kept on coming. Solid service, solid food, just be prepared to watch OTHERS eating for a while before you do.

We biked here from the hotel after being advised it's a good place to stop in for breakfast. It's a no frills but lots of laughs joint. Lots of laughs because of the people who were here and the art work. Wooden booths inside and there is outside seating but it was full at 10am. It's a combo of locals and tourist hangout. It has the KW feel to it. Food: Average. Pulled Pork omelette was the special and it didn't have much pp. The fresh fruit it came with was a nice bonus and healthy too. I also sampled the french toast with cream cheese along with the coconut bread (they have a bread of the day apparently). Portions aren't overly generous. Prices: Inexpensive. Service: Average. No mistakes. Nothing over the top. It's a good stop if you want an ok breakfast.

Very friendly place and I loved the ambiance. Very Key West. The oysters were fantastic but I only giving it 3 stars because of my husband's dinner. It was supposed to be a 16 oz. bone in rib eye for $32 and it was neither very good quality and it did not look like any 16 oz. in size. I had the mahi florentine with asparagus and baked sweet potato. Mine was actually pretty good. The menu is rather limited however so I don't know that I would go back for dinner. Appetizers? Yes. Breakfast? Maybe based on other reviews.

The best place for breakfast.. Love it and must try in Key West. Very clean and service is awesome. Drinks are perfect and always fresh. I haven't had dinner here but the menu looks very good and if it as good as it is in the morning I can't wait to try dinner here next time.

Consistency is key!!!! Oh Pepe, what happened to ye? I ordered the same things we always get at Pepe's every year and this time I thought to myself the food was frozen at the time of our last visit and just thawed for us. so sad.... I will go back again, everyone has a bad day and the Pepe's vibe is just soooo good. But please amp up the food quality and presentation.

We stumbled upon Pepes going to the ferry and it was a find! It looks unassuming and a bit unimpressive from the outside-but just go in. The food is amazing! We had fresh shrimp with home made sauce and the Parmesan crusted grouper which was delicious! The margaritas are made fresh with lime juice and juts order the key lime pie. I promise you wont regret! Soooo delicious!

Doesn't look like a place I would normally stop but a local told me to try it. Has not changed much since 1909. Food is good but pricey and the portions were small. It has a lot of history if you like that stuff.

I really don't understand the popularity of this joint. The only thing it has going for it is the cute ambiance and fresh squeezed orange juice. After waiting for almost an hour (after being told 20 minutes) we finally got seated. After 10 minutes without a server we finally flagged the host down, who, without a word, threw a stack of menus on the table. Minutes later, our waitress appeared, not friendly at all. Of course, they were out of the crab cake Benedict that I ordered. So I ordered a cream cheese and scallion omelette, which was flat and tasteless. Even the toast was dry and not toasted. At the end of the meal a single tab was presented (without asking if we would like anything else). When asked if we could have separate tabs she said no. And the prices are way too high for what you get. Stay away from this place!

Disappointing is an understatement! We had a party of six and were told the wait was 30 mins- it ended up closer to an hour- manageable- except tables were just sitting there open and we were still waiting. Worse part was they were out of just about everything- each person in our group had to settle for something they didn't really want because our first and second choices were out. After that long of a wait- we would have appreciated a warning that they were low on some key menu items- we would have went elsewhere and understood. Instead they strung us along and told us the news as we ordered. I settled for a vegetable plate - all I can say is bland and a waste is money. A friend ordered a loaded baked potato and she was given what looked like the smallest potato in the "Idaho" bag from my fridge at home - and it had noting on it- not even cut open! When my husband talked to the manager about the shortcomings, she immediately went into a defensive mode and argued with him- never acknowledging his concerns or apologizing! I could go on... But won't bother wasting any more time on this hot mess!

Heard tons about this place after we moved to key west. couldnt say i was impressed, and heres why. 1. service was good, nothing special, but decent 2. food was standard cafeteria style food. now i love cafeterias but the prices here will blow your freaking mind away. 3. back on prices, very pricey for the quality of food, and diversity of food. so in summary, what they did have going for them was. 1. unique decor 2. great bar 3. fun ppl 4. easy location , off duval (a good thing) my main gripe? weak food at high prices.

Stopped in for a quick lunch. Fish sandwich was good, but no better than a dozen other restaurants in K West with similar menus. They bragged so much on the Key Lime pie that I had a piece. I was not happy with it. A bit gelatinous (almost rubbery). I don't recommend it.

    (2)
  • Mark B.

Our whole family loves Pepe's. Been coming here for over 30 years. It's our first stop every year in Key West; my son even wore a Pepe's t-shirt to the restaurant today. But for lunch this afternoon we had absolutely horrible service. Ruined my day. So 4 stars for the food, 0 for the service. Not sure I'll ever go back.

Breakfast is always great. They make a great Mimosa with fresh squeezed OJ. Filet at dinner was excellent. Chicken was very dry and inedible. Wine list sucks as there was very little available by the glass.

Stopped in at Pepe's about 9:00 p.m. Sunday night after a sunset sail. Too crowded outside, so I sat inside the dark, but cozy dining room. Exceptionally friendly service, great gazpacho and 1/2 pound of stone crab made for a great light dinner to end a good day in Key West. Pepe's is down-home but consistently good quality. Highly recommended.

Pork Chops Smothered Steak - Yum Yum Haven't had their breakfast, hotel offers free breakfast, and I am not a breakfast before noon type so, unless I'm there with folks who eat breakfast before lunch time, I'll never know. Yes, it doesn't look more than a hole in the wall, and the wait staff and owner do behave like we are intruding on a family dinner.

Be warned, their chopped beef entree is actually a ground beef hamburger patty without a bun. They should be more clear and mention something when u order it. It's also $10 bucks more than a burger.

Best Key Lime Pie in Key West. The pie is a perfect combination of tartness with a hint of sweetness from the whipped cream. A must try for the key lime pie connoisseur.

Breakfast here is heavenly... Papaya Bread was Fantastic... i loved everything about this hole-in-the-wall joint. It's great...and fits right into the Key West scene :) Laid back...and down right good FOOD! It's been forever since I've gone back to Key West..but if I visit again, Pepe's will be on my list of places to go. One of my Top 3 breakfast/brunch places in all of the U.S!

I loved this place. From the outside it doesn't look like much, after all the place is 100 years old in 2009. In fact, the exterior looks like crap, which probably serves a useful function for keeping away the fat tourists who probably stomp right by it by the thousands, all ticked off because they couldn't get a rezzo at Seven Fishes - but on the inside the food is as good as it gets. It's better than Seven Fishes. It's exactly what you want in Key West, a tucked away little place that's as old as anything anywhere and where the seafood is so pristine it doesn't need buerre blanc avec tarragon to dress it up. This place is for reals. The interior is beautifully clean and welcoming, but we sat outdoors to enjoy the raucous heat and humidity knifed through by the cool pelagic breeze. We had the oysters rockafeller for the first course - baked oysters smothered in garlic and cheese? YES THANK YOU. Then I had mahi mahi with mashed potatoes and gravy, and my husband had the same thing only blackened rather than grilled. Everything was absolutely delicious - the previous Yelper was right that things may require condiments but they have a big basket of them right there for you to use - not ketchup and mustard here mind you, but fascinating little sauces I'd never heard of. I randomly used the habanero sauce on my fish and it tasted great. As for the person who complained about the wine list - if you give a damn about the wine list, you're in the wrong restaurant. This place is for you if you want a really laid back, Key West style dinner out in the beautiful, hot moonlight (great-looking patio right off the ocean). I don't know about the breakfast, but dinner was great. It was the ultimate in very, very casual dining. The pina coladas there are the best I have ever had. The servers were absolutely outstanding too. Our latina waitress spoke flawless English and was quite prompt bringing everything out. She also recited specials from memory but with a casual friendliness. There were many specials. The best part of our evening, however, was the chance to chat with the locals. After a couple of drinks, we became entertained by the conversation of obvious Key West natives at the bar. They didn't resent us being there at all, in fact we were very warmly welcomed with a round (which we returned of course), but it was clear this was "their place" - a hideaway from people sick of tourism, commercialism, and getting the $35 t-shirt. We learned dark secrets about Key West that we will never forget. A very, very fine time, in fact one of the best nights I have ever experienced. It ain't just the food people, although the food is great. It's the mojo.

We just popped in here for lunch. Everybody was really friendly. The manager of the place even personally took the time out to write the name down of one of her friends that charters a fishing boat. I can't speak for breakfast or dinner, but the fresh fish sandwhich with macaroni salad was great. They probably make most of their money on steaks, but I felt it was great for whta I paid.

  • Tim M.

Breakfast was delightful. My wife enjoyed the French toast with fresh fruit so much that we came back a few days later and had it again! We ate inside the first time and outside the second, and the service was great both times. Can't comment on lunch or dinner, but breakfast is a great value. We'll be back.
